Obituary for Patricia Dawn (Mead) Rath

St. Albans - Patricia Dawn (Mead) Rath, age 72 of St. Albans, passed away unexpectedly while vacationing in Florida, on March 25th, 2013. She was born to the late Lyman Lorenzo Mead and the late Violet May (Chetwynd) Mead, on February 24th, 1941. Patricia married the love of her life, Peter Christian Rath, on March 31st, 1962. They would have been married 51 years. She graduated from BFA, St. Albans in 1959, and then the Burlington School of Cosmetology, working at the Colonial Styling Center until she retired in the fall of 1992. Friends and family were our mother’s delight. She loved spending time with her husband and children, most especially her grandchildren, attending their concerts, plays, recitals, and games, snuggling and hanging out in the Northwest, picking blueberries and going to the zoo. From the simplest of family dinners, to holiday traditions, or evenings sitting around a campfire, family was always most important. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling with our father, her best buddy, experiencing the beauty and culture of many places, with France being one of special meaning, having lived there for some time. Because of her interest in people and their way of life, she made herself a student of culture, no matter where they were, which allowed both she and our father to be welcomed and accepted by so many, developing friendships with people from all over. Our mother loved all kinds of music, filling her home with memorable sounds of Sinatra, the Gypsy Kings and all kinds of classical music, a gift she has passed down to her grandchildren. An evening out to a performance was a favorite past time, whether it was as simple as a local school performance or to see “Les Miserables” with her husband and friends. A painter and an artist at heart, from the time was a young child, our mother was always stopping to admire the use of color or brush stroke to achieve a certain affect. Interested in learning, she spent many hours studying paintings of Monet and van Gogh, often working to teach herself how to use techniques; filling her home and our lives with paintings of some of the many places she traveled. The love she received from her many friends, particularly her “Thursday Lunch Bunch” brought wonderful memories for Patricia, only to solidify the values she taught her own children about the importance of relationships. We would like her many friends to know how much she truly treasured them. Patricia is survived by her husband of 51 years, Peter Rath, of St. Albans, her daughter, Kirsten (Rath) Belrose and her husband, Jeff, their three children, Jeffrey, Hannah and Olivia, also of St. Albans, her son Eric and his wife, Jenny, their two children Mason and Mia, of Seattle Washington, her sister, Donna (Mead) Mac Fadden and husband, John, of Saratoga, her nephew Scott of Huntington Beach, California, her brother in law, Timothy Rath, and his wife, Donna, of St. Albans, and her sister in law, Sandra Knapp, of Richford. Our family would like to extend our deepest appreciation to some very special friends, Mr. and Mrs. David Powell and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ubald Hebert for their love and support during this difficult time. It was our mother’s wish not to have calling hours. A memorial service in celebration of her life is scheduled for Thursday, April 4th, at 11:00A.M at the First Congregational Church, 27 Church Street in St. Albans. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, C/O Matching Gifts, 230 East Ohio Street, Suite 304, Chicago, IL 60611, or the Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Foundation, National Headquarters, 115 Broadway, Suite 1301, New York, NY 10006 Arrangements are provided by the Heald Funeral Home, where private messages of condolence are welcome at
