Obituary for Luther H. Hilliker

Bedford, VA/St. Albans, VT – Luther H. Hilliker, 100, a longtime resident of this area passed away early Saturday, July 25, 2009, at the Oakwood Manor, in Bedford, Virginia. Luther was born in Swanton, Vermont on December 15, 1908. His parents died when he was young and he was raised by his grandmother, Violette Hilliker. On August 19, 1935, in St. Albans, Luther married the former Laura McGowan, who survives him. They celebrated their seventy-third wedding anniversary on August 19, 2008. Luther and Laura moved to Virginia in January of 2006, where they enjoyed being with family, including grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his favorite dog, “Buddy”. He attended school in Swanton and St. Albans. He then worked at the Wilcox farm in St. Albans until 1941, when he began his thirty-three year career with the St. Albans City Fire Department. He retired from the Fire Department in 1973 as Deputy Chief. Luther also served as a Franklin County Deputy Sheriff, was a member of St. Paul’s’ United Methodist Church and spent many days working alongside Raymond W. Heald. In December of 2008, Luther had a special 100th birthday celebration surrounded by four loving generations of Hillikers. Survivors include his beloved wife of seventy-three years, Laura of Thaxton, Virginia; their two sons, Allen and his wife, Samera, of Grand Isle, Vermont and Brian and his wife, Patricia, of Thaxton, Virginia; three grandchildren, Tammy Hilliker, Karen Hilliker and Kimberly French and her husband, Bryan; four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Meghan, Kyle and Courtney all of Virginia and his sister-in-law, Enid Blatchley of St. Albans, Vermont. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans with the Reverend William Simmons, Chaplain for the St. Albans City Fire Department officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot the St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Vermont Cancer Society, 55 Day Lane, Williston, Vermont 05495.
