St. Albans – Winona Marion Underwood, 85, a resident of this area since 1955, passed away late Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Redstone Villa in St. Albans. Born on March 16, 1924, in Enosburgh, Vermont, she was the daughter of the late Wayne Ellis and Hildred (Vadney) Austin. Winona was married to Ralph Wesley Underwood, who preceded her in death on October 23, 1987. Winona was educated at the Bakersfield Elementary School and graduated from Brigham Academy in Bakersfield. During her working career, she was employed by the Union Carbide Corporation, worked as a clerk for the Giant Store and later for Ames Department Store. She enjoyed her flower gardens,sewing, traveling, playing cards, walking and especially meeting her friends at McDonalds. Winona was a member of Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Robert E. Glidden Post # 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and the First Baptist Church of St. Albans. Survivors include her sons, Ralph Underwood and his wife, Susan, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; David Underwood and his wife, Sherry, of Sheldon and Jeffrey Underwood of St. Albans; her daughter, Pamela Richer and her husband, Don, of Colchester; her grandchildren, Scott Choinere, Jodi Dexter and her husband, Matt, Abbey Underwood, Shannon Harrison and her husband, Kevin, Jennifer Cary and her husband, Chris, Chris Underwood and his wife, Stacy and Eric Underwood and his wife, Nom and several great-grandchildren. Winona is also survived by her sister, Shirley Duffy of Wilton, New York; her brothers, Wendell Austin of San Bernardino, California and Calvin Austin of Lake Havasu City, Arizona and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 8, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans with the Reverend William Simmons, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of St. Albans officiating. Interment will be later this spring in the family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Winona’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from Noon until the time of the service.
