Cambridge – Winnifred DeCelle Cary, 87, passed away late Thursday, September 24, 2009, at the Northwestern Medical Center with her loving family at her side. Born in Waitsfield, Vermont on February 19, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Moses and Laura (Buzzell) DeCelle. On March 17, 1941, in Milton, she married Carlyle H. Cary, who preceded her in death on April 25, 1994. Winnifred was a 1939 graduate of Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans. She retired from IBM in 1982. Winnifred was a member and Past Noble Grand of Bellevue Rebekah Lodge of St. Albans; Past President of Rebekah Assembly of Vermont; Past President of Ladies Auxiliaries Patriarchs Militant of Vermont and Quebec; Past Deputy Grand Matriarch of Grand Encampment of Vermont and also was a member of the Fletcher Grange, Franklin County Pomona Grange, Vermont State Grange, National Grange and a member of AARP in Milton and Jeffersonville. Winnifred loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping with friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include her son, Howard Cary and wife, Linda of Jeffersonville, her grandchildren and their spouses, Michele Quick, Alan and Jennifer Cary, Peter and Lisa Quick and Wendy and John LaFreniere; her great grandchildren, Brian and Jessica Metcalf, Conner and Kyle Quick, Amber, Marissa, Lindsay and Trevor Cary and Nicole and Katie LaFreniere and many nieces and nephews. Winnifred is also survived by her son-in-law, Claude Quick, Jr. of New York, her sister, Carol Sheppard and husband, Robert of Brattleboro and her sisters-in-law, Odessa Cary of Milton and Jane DeCelle of South Burlington and special nephew, George DeCelle and his wife, Lillian of St. Albans. In addition to her parents and her husband, Carlyle, Winnifred was preceded in death by her daughter, Lilla W. Quick on October 31, 1997, her brothers, Martin, Robert and Alan Decell, her sisters, Anna DeCelle and Jeannette Page and her brothers-in-law, Franklin Cary and Russell Cary and sister-in-law, Rhoda Cary. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 28, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. The Reverend Herman Benjamin, Pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist church will officiate. Interment will follow in the Cary family lot in Milton Village Cemetery. Winnifred’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 12 Noon until the time of the service.
