Obituary for Toini Peissner Palo

St. Albans – Toini (Jurva) Palo, a former longtime resident of this community passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at her residence in Lakeworth, Florida. She was born on February 11, 1918, in Worcester, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Charles and Fanny (Kaakinen) Jurva. Toini was a graduate of Conant High School in New Hampshire, National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, Springfield College in New Hampshire and also studied in Finland, Russia, Czech Republic and China. She was a retired Director of Guidance, teacher of Health, Physical Education and School Nurse for Bellows Free Academy. She also was a retired Doctor of Chiropractic having practice in St. Albans form 1946 – 1978 and then part-time in Florida. Toini also was Past President of the St. Albans Woman’s Club, 1st Vice-President, Vermont State P.T.A., Chairman of the Health Committee for Vermont P.T.A., Member of North Palm Beach Chapter, American Association of University Women, Volunteer Teacher, Lantana Elementary School- Teach English to Finnish children, taught “Fitness over 50” at Waterford, Juno, former Girl Scout Leader, charter member, St. Albans Garden Club and former Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. She enjoyed playing bridge, tennis and received several awards from the Northwestern Riding and Driving Club. In November of 1994, she published a book, “The Milkman’s Daughter”. Survivors include her son, Jan Peissner of Otter River, Massachusetts; her daughter, Taina Cameron of McEwen, Tennessee; her grandchildren, Tara, Rachel and Nathaniel and her great-granddaughter, Jacqueline. In addition to her parents, Toini was preceded by her husbands, Dr. Franz Peissner in 1975 and Jacob Palo in 1996. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, corner of Fairfield and Church Streets. Toini’s family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. Interment will be in the family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Those wishing to honor Toini’s memory are asked to contribute to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 8 Bishop Street, St. Albans, VT 05478.
