Obituary for Thomas Oliver Mongeon

St. Albans – Thomas O. Mongeon suddenly passed away on February 4, 2015, after 73 years of life and reunited with his son, Kyndle. Tom was born on February 24, 1941, to Oliver and Marion Aldrich Mongeon in Burlington, Vermont. In 1961, he met the love of his life, Bonnie Brooks, and eloped for a marriage that would have been 54 years this March proving to doubters that young love can prevail. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Kyndle, “The Best”, who passed away tragically in 1993, and Reita and Allen Brooks. He is survived by his wife and best friend Bonnie. Tom leaves two children and their spouses: Tory and Virginia Mongeon, Heidi and Scott Gilley, as well as five grandchildren, Bryce and fiancée Kim Pilka, Quinn and Keira Mongeon, Rylan and Kyndra Gilley. Tom also leaves two special grandchildren Olivia & Vinny Vitorino. Forever siblings are Joey Mongeon (Sharon), Bette Grenon (Jerry), Mike Mongeon (Linda), and Connie Zeno (Gary), along with his brother in laws Spencer Brooks (Donna), Robert Brooks (Susan) and many nieces & nephews. For most of his life Tom lived in Vermont, graduating from Burlington High School in 1959 where he was a three sport letter winner and voted best athlete in his class. He also played on the winning Vermont vs. New Hampshire Shrine football game. Tom graduated from University of Vermont in 1965 where he excelled for the Catamount’s football team, playing both offense and defense. He worked for General Electric and in 1970 his career took him to Burnt Hills, NY where he and Bonnie continued to raise their family. In 1986, they moved back to St. Albans, Vermont. Tinkering Tom enjoyed life, cherished his family and was very proud of all his children and grandchildren. He loved to attend their sporting events and other activities. In 2000 he retired from General Electric and started what he called his best job ever, Retirement! He loved fishing and boating on Lake Champlain, and mowing the lawn in the summer. In the winter you could find him tanning, biking, and fishing on Sharky’s Pier in Venice Florida. (If the fish weren’t biting, the bar was always open). Tom loved people and was always making new friends. After his son Kyndle’s death, the family held an annual memorial golf tournament. While Tom was not a golfer, he was quick to assume the role of “social director” and made sure all of Kyndle’s classmates and friends had a good time. Tom always looked forward to seeing Kyndle’s friends as well as making new ones who came to the tournament. After 19 years he will be dearly missed at this year’s 20th golf tournament. A Memorial Service celebrating Tom will be held Sunday, June 21st in St. Albans, VT with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Tom’s memory to the Kyndle O. Mongeon Scholarship, c/o Bellows Free Academy, Attn: Shirley Raymond, 71 South Main Street, St. Albans, VT 05478. Messages of condolence to Tom’s family are welcome at www.healdfuneralhome.com.
