Highgate – Thelma F. Dunton, 90, a lifelong resident of this area passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at the St. Albans Healthcare and Rehab Center with her loving family at her side. Born on July 12, 1919, in Swanton, she was the daughter of the late Edward M and Mabel (Bertrand) Gay. Thelma was married to Fletcher F. Dunton, who preceded her in death in 1984. Thelma graduated from the Swanton High School and during her younger years served as a caregiver. Upon her marriage to Fletcher, they operated a farm together. She enjoyed her flower gardens, gardening, cooking and bird watching. Thelma was a longtime member of the Rice Hill United Methodist Church. Survivors include her children, John Dunton and David Dunton both of Sheldon and Mary Bessette and her husband, William of St. Albans; her three grandchildren, Michael Bessette, John Bessette and his wife, Melissa and Elizabeth Bessette; her brother, George Gay of St. Albans; her two sisters, Alma Marquette of St. Albans and Theresa Ratta of Plattsburg, New York and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, Thelma was preceded in death by her sister, Madeline Medlar and her brother, Harold Gay. Visiting hours will be today, Thursday April 8, 2010, from 5 to 8 PM in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday April 9th in the Heald Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Kerry Cameron officiating. Private interment will take place in the Dunton family lot in the Rice Hill Cemetery.
