St. Albans - Steven Wechsler died peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2013. Steve was born in Brooklyn (and proud of it!) on November 3, 1946 to George and Violet (Markowitz) Wechsler, a family of Romanian and Hungarian Jewish ancestry. He grew up in Baldwin NY as an only child in a multi-generational close knit family with his grandmother, cousins, aunts and uncles in the neighborhood. He was an early and ardent fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers and heartbroken when they left NY. He graduated from Baldwin High School in 1964 and the University of Michigan in 1968. He attended the University of Michigan Law School and later became an attorney in Vermont by reading law. Steve and Judy (Cummins) met as students at the University of Michigan and they married in 1970. Together they were the proud parents of their son Jesse – their greatest accomplishment. Steve was loyal in his love. He was fair minded, logical and thoughtful in his approach to life. He possessed exceptional mathematical and analytical skills which he put to good use as an attorney in St. Albans and at card tables all over the world. He was a traveler, an explorer, and a navigator – always finding the longest, most interesting “short cutâ€. And he never turned back. He loved living on the shore of Lake Champlain where he was happiest on the boat with his son Jesse as his co-pilot and then again later with his grandchildren. He photographed many beautiful Lake Champlain sunsets. Steve contributed to his neighbors and community with many years of service as a justice of the peace, town planner and member of the development review board. He was a loving husband - Judy’s biggest fan, a fiercely proud father of Jesse, and delighted when Jenee, whom Jesse married, came into his life. His grandchildren Avery and Samuel completed his family life. Steve benefited greatly from the gift of life through organ donation in 2005 and he would want you to consider this life giving decision. Calling hours with the family will be held at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So Main St, St. Albans on Tuesday, April 2nd from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, followed by a Service of Tribute and Remembrance of Steve. A contribution in his memory to the Lake Champlain Land Trust, One Main Street, Burlington, Vermont 05401 (www.LCLT.org), , should you desire, will perpetuate his love for Lake Champlain. Private messages of condolence are welcome at www.healdfuneralhome.com.
