Obituary for Stephen W. Heald, Sr.

Shrewsbury - Mr. Stephen W. Heald, Sr., of Shrewsbury, died at home on Monday night, September 28, 2009 surrounded by his family after a well fought fight with cancer. He was 67. Steve was born February 17, 1942 in St. Albans, Vermont the third child of Raymond W. and Barbara (McCarron) Heald. He was raised and educated in St. Albans and was a graduate of Bellows Free Academy, class of 1960. He graduated from The University of Vermont in Burlington, Class of 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce, Economics and Accounting. He was President of Sigma Phi Fraternity. Though raised in a family of three generations of funeral directors he left his much loved and native Vermont upon graduation and moved to Boston to work with Price Waterhouse Coopers. He married Patricia M. Dulligan in November of 1966 at St. Patrick's Church in Watertown. After having accepted a job as Controller for the former State Mutual Life Insurance Company in Worcester together they settled in Shrewsbury 1970 and raised their five children. In 1979 Steve founded Heald CPA and Heald Computer Services, Inc. and ran the day-to-day operations of his business. Though numbers were his forte he treasured the relationships he had with many of his clients. To him they were more like friends who visited to swap stories, share a good laugh and drop off their taxes. Steve loved being a Certified Public Accountant and reminded his family this past year that he survived his final and 46th tax season. He maintained professional associations in his field of accountancy and memberships locally in various organizations and his church. He also taught accounting and finance courses at area colleges and authored articles for trade journals and accounting publications. Steve's passions were fishing, boating and woodworking. A skilled birdhouse maker he had a talent that was a gift in which he replicated the homes of family members and friends. He was able to fix most anything, albeit not perfect, but it was always an admirable attempt. He loved a good joke and laugh and will forever be remembered for his stories, many of which were long and repeated, but certainly entertaining. Lastly, anyone whom he met just once or knew for a lifetime was on his email distribution list. He had a great command of the English language and was skilled at writing. Steve was in touch with so many family and friends through email shortly before his death. This gave him such comfort as family and friends from near and far offered words of support, encouragement, thanks and well wishes for his next journey. It truly was a peace and love-filled good-bye. He leaves his wife of nearly 45 years, Patricia M. (Dulligan) Heald; his children, Stephen W. Heald, Jr. and his wife, Ellen, of Danvers, Mary E.
