St. Albans - Shirley Mae Saunders, 80, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, Tanya, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in St. Albans Town, February 8, 1928, the daughter of the late Henry W. and Ruth E. (Kirby) Saunders. Shirley was employed at A.N. Deringer from 1952 through 1991. Shirley leaves behind many friends made during her time at Deringer, including her closest friend, Christine Ward, whom she met when Christine started work at Deringer in 1953. Shirley truly enjoyed the coffee and donut tradition she and Chris began at Deringer and continued until Shirley’s illness precluded their ritual. After her retirement, Shirley worked part-time at Bertek Systems. Her presence there brightened everyone’s days. Shirley worked with her son Michael and their time together at Bertek has left him with many special memories. Some of Shirley’s best memories are from the times she and her family spent at her summer home on Samson Point over the course of almost forty years. In her leisure she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, puzzles and her cat, but her greatest pleasure was spending time with her granddaughter, Addie Mae. Shirley is survived by her son, Michael G. Saunders of St. Albans; her daughter, Tanya M. Saunders and Tanya’s companion, Kristin A. White of St. Albans; her granddaughter, Addison Mae Saunders-White of St. Albans; her brother, Robert H. Saunders, of Northfield, Connecticut, and nephews; John, Peter, Mark, Steven, and Jimmy. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Reverend Charlene Saunders and a sister-in-law, Dolores Saunders. A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2008, at 11:00 A.M. at the Saunders family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery on the Lake Road with the Reverend Herman Benjamin, Pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church officiating. At Shirley’s request there will be no visitation. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vermont 05478. The Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans is assisting Shirley’s family with arrangements. Condolences and memories may be sent to the family through www.healdfuneralhome.com.
