Obituary for Shirley Lorraine (Ploof) Blouin

St. Albans, VT - BLOUIN, Shirley Lorraine (Ploof), 91, a longtime St. Albans resident passed away on Wednesday, September 8th, 2021. She was born in South Burlington on May 7th, 1930, daughter to the late Clifford Ploof and Edith Cushing who predeceased her in 1981 and 1965, respectively.

Shirley was married to Samuel D. Blouin for 42 years until he was called to Heaven unexpectedly in 1989. They had six children together, all of whom survive her passing: Perry Blouin of Batesville, IN, Paula (Michael)Teague of St. Albans Bay, VT, Patty (James) Melton of San Diego, CA, Peter Blouin and Penny Phillips of St. Albans, VT, and Peggy Thomas and her fiancé, Mark Fletcher of Hardwick, VT.

Shirley began working at the age of 15 in Burlington then transitioned to St. Albans in 1947 where she became well established in the food service and sales industries. After her marriage to Sam, Shirley assisted in the operation of S.D. Blouin Construction Company for many years. Following Sam’s passing, she took great joy in operating a craft show with her daughter, Peggy, at the Collins Perley Sports Complex for 12 years.

In honor of Sam’s service during World War II, Shirley maintained active, lifelong memberships with the American Legion--Green Mountain Post and Veterans of Foreign Wars--Robert E. Glidden Post. She was also an active member of the Moose Lodge. Shirley’s life was deeply enriched by her involvement with these groups and her relationships with its members.

Shirley was a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved to share moments with her family and friends year after year. She lived each day with passion and laughter, never passing up an opportunity to deliver the perfect punch line. She loved to bowl, play bingo, and dance, as well as indulge in the occasional Tom Collins. As a lover of Gene Autry, NASCAR, and the Boston Red Sox, there was no shortage of memorabilia in Shirley’s home. She even celebrated her 80th birthday at Fenway Stadium in Boston with homemade posters, an appearance on the stadium camera, and a personalized birthday message from the Red Sox themselves. Well-traveled in her later years, Shirley was so excited to have explored international destinations such as Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, England, Ireland, Australia, and the Bahamas. Her favorite cuisine was, undoubtedly, locally caught perch from Lake Champlain which she enjoyed until her last days. Shirley’s charisma and sense of humor will be forever remembered and cherished.

Shirley spent many years on her CB and Ham radio. She made so many new friends and acquaintances from all over the U.S. and abroad. Those were some of the happiest days of her life. She loved meeting new people and they all loved her. She will forever be known as “Red Feather”.

Shirley treasured those who preceded her, holding their memories close. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her granddaughter, Jamie Lee Blouin, passed suddenly at the age of four months (1976), son-in-law, Duane Thomas, age 48, (1999); three brothers: Arnold Ploof (1972), Kenneth Ploof (1989) and Reginald Ploof (2010); sisters: Leona Hayden (1996) and Bernice Walter (2015); several aunts and uncles including a special couple who raised Shirley, Dora and Frank Mills.

In addition to her children, Shirley is survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as other members of the Ploof and Blouin families.

Calling hours will be Sunday, September 19th, 2021, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

In celebration of Shirley’s life, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on September 20th, at 11:00 AM at the Holy Angels Catholic Church, Lake Street in St. Albans.
