Obituary for Ruth May Menard

St. Albans - June 19, 2012, we mourn the loss of our mother, Ruth M. Menard; born to Claude and Anna Mae (Desourgy) Hargett on December 27, 1917, in Plattsburg, New York. She was the oldest girl of 13 children. On August 27, 1936, she married her true love, Almon J. Menard and together they raised 5 children, Emmett, June, Richard, Constance and Gary. The Menard family moved from New York and lived in Orange, Massachusetts for many years. In 1954, Ruth, Almon and 3 of the children still at home moved to Essex, New York. They also lived in Elizabethtown, New York before settling in Vermont. They lived for a short time in South Burlington, moved to Grove Street, Burlington and then to Williston. In 1997, Ruth moved to St. Albans to live with her daughter, Connie. Along the way, Ruth made many friends. She belonged to the VFW for many years and was President and Past President of the Chapter in Orange, Massachusetts. She and her husband ran a dairy bar at one time. She worked as a waitress and, also in the machine shop in Orange and at the hospital in Athol. In New York, she waitressed and also, worked for a local nursing home. In Vermont, she worked for the hospital nursing home and at the Mary Fletcher Hospital in the laundry and the snack bar. She worked for three different fraternities of the University of Vermont as a cook and the students became very big admirers of the good meals she prepared for them. Ruth was an avid vegetable gardener. Her joy was to share the bounty of her harvest with those in need and family. Ruth is survived by her daughter June Parker and her husband, Wilfred , daughter Constance Kilburn, her brother, Emmett Hargett and his wife, Diana, her sister, Mandy Zani, daughter-in-law, Patricia Menard and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Almon and three sons, Emmett, Gary and Richard, two granddaughters, Johana and Bridgette; her siblings, Ladska, Arthur, Vernie, Vera, Nina, Leon, Cleo, Lettie, Alberta, and Coy. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held on Friday June 22, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Ruth’s family will receive friends immediately following the service at a reception to be held at the funeral home. Interment will be in the East End Cemetery in Williston at 2:00 PM.
