Obituary for Ruth Janet MacCallum

Ruth Janet MacCallum St. Albans - Ruth Janet MacCallum, 90, a lifelong resident and longtime educator of this area, passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2007, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility following a brief illness. She was born in St. Albans, Vermont on June 30, 1916, the daughter of the late William C. and Gladys (Thomas) MacCallum. Janet graduated from Johnson Normal School in 1936 and received a Bachelor’s degree from Johnson in 1944. She began her teaching career in a one-room school in Georgia Plains in 1936. Over the next forty years, she taught in St. Albans and Burlington, retiring in 1976. Always a lover of nature and the outdoors, Janet was very involved in girl scouting. She took a break from teaching to serve as Girl Scout Executive Director in Gardner, Massachusetts and later as Field Director in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was a member of the Franklin County Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association, Vermont Retired Teachers Association, and the Miniature Society of Northwest Vermont. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Welden Chapter # 79, Order of Eastern Star and a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Upon retirement, Janet continued teaching, but in a different way. She held ceramics classes in her home, sharing the enjoyment she found in this hobby with others up until the time of her death. Janet was a kind and generous women of great spirit. She will be deeply missed by her many friends, neighbors and family members for whom she was a constant source of strength and comfort. Survivors include her sister, Barbara Mayo and her husband, Robert of St. Albans Bay, her sister-in-law, Lois MacCallum of South Yarmouth, Massachusetts and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her brothers, William T. MacCallum and Roger C. MacCallum, her sister-in-law, Lucille MacCallum and her niece, Linda Elliott. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2007, at 2:00 P.M. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans with the Reverend Dennis E. Hayward, Rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in St. Albans. In accordance with Janet’s wishes, there will be no visiting hours.
