St. Albans - Ronald “Smokey” J. Roberts, 72, of St. Petersburg, FL passed away on March 6, 2018, with Kerry and Tim at his side. He was born in St. Albans, VT on July 24, 1945, to Fredrick and Barbara Roberts.
Ronald graduated from BFA St. Albans in 1963. Post-graduation, Ron served two years in the U.S. Navy. After active duty, he spent four years in the Navy Reserves while working full-time at IBM. He was very responsible and attentive to his family. He supported his family by dedicating 30 years of his life to IBM, and during the early family years, often worked two jobs.
Ron married Joan Ovitt in 1963 and had six children who survive him, Kelly Greenwood (Andrew), Jeff (Melissa), Shannon Hungerford (Dave), Chad (Charles), Kerry Weston (Timothy), and Erin Roberts
In 1987, Ron re-married Barbara (Cauchon) Crowley, in addition to Barbara, Ron is survived by her children, Bruce, Dennis, Christine, Patricia, Brenda, and Leonard. Together they shared twenty-four grandchildren and fifteen great grand-children.
He also loved animals and leaves behind his beloved dog, Pepper.
Ron is also survived by his brother and best friend, Richard Roberts (Ellen) and his brother-in-law, Robert Lamarche (Pat). He leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
Ron is predeceased by his parents, Fredrick and Barbara Roberts, his sister, Sally Lamarche, and sister-in-law, Helen Roberts. He was also predeceased by his grandson, Connor Roberts.
Ron always had a story to tell. He loved to dance, watch hockey and football, listen to music, and enjoyed playing cards. He also enjoyed the company of his lifelong friend, Skip (Darlene) Lehmann.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Ron’s life in St. Petersburg, FL.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Connor Roberts Memorial Fund, 20 Tanglewood Drive, St. Albans, VT 05478 or the Alzheimer's Association, Vermont Chapter, 300 Cornerstone Drive- Suite 130, Williston, VT 05495.
