Enosburg Falls/St. Albans, Vermont - Robert Walter Baker, 88, a resident of this area for the past eight years, passed away on Monday July 6, 2009, at the Northwestern Medical Center with his loving family at his side. Born in Naugatuck, Connecticut on June 22, 1921, he was the son of the late Walter and Lydia (Platt) Baker. Robert was married to the former Wilma Owens Raap for fifty-five years. Wilma preceded him in death on May 16, 2002. During World War II, Robert left high school in 1942 to join the United States Marine Corps, where he served in the Southwest Pacific and participated in the treasury Bougainville Operation, Consolidation of the Northern Solomons and the Defense of Piva Yoke. He received his Honorable Discharge on October 18, 1945 with the rank of Tech Sergeant. Following his discharge he went to work for Chase Brass and Copper Corporation in Waterbury, Connecticut, retiring after twenty-nine years as a salesman. In 1984, upon his retirement, Robert and Wilma moved to Cape Cod and then to St. Albans in 2001. He was an avid gardener and a member of Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion in St. Albans. Survivors include his son, William R. Baker and his wife, Christina, of St. Albans; two grandsons, Jeremy Baker and his wife, Stacy, of Rutland, Vermont and Christopher Baker and his wife, Sandra, of Essex Junction, Vermont; four great grandchildren, Thomas, Laurel, Maisie and Anna. Robert is also survived by a brother, John J. Baker and wife, Alice, of Pensacola, Florida and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. in the First Congregational Church on Church Street in St. Albans. The Reverend Judy Steger Kennedy will officiate. Interment will be at the convenience of his family in the Veterans National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, Vermont 05495.
