Obituary for Robert M. "Rob" Jahngen

Colchester – Robert M. Jahngen, 61, a resident of this area for the past five years passed away on Friday June 10, 2011, after a long illness, with his loving wife and family at his side. He was born in Long Island, New York, on October 15, 1949, the son of the late Edwin and Lillian (Stanborough) Jahngen. On May 25, 2007, Rob married Barbara A. Schoen at their home in Colchester. Rob retired from the Department of Homeland Security in 2007. In addition to his wife, Barbara, Rob is survived by his two children; a son, Matthew Jahngen and his wife, Sandy, of South Carolina; a daughter, Shannon Garnsey and her husband, Tom, of Casco, Maine; two step-sons; Scott Schoen and his wife, Helen, of Jackson, New Jersey, and Jack Schoen and his wife, Melinda, of Amsterdam, New York. He is also survived by his brother, Edwin Jahngen and his wife, Pamela, of Kingston, New Hampshire; his sister, Kathi Edgar and her husband, Mike, of Hampton, New Hampshire and his sister-in-law, Kathleen Swallick of Fredericksburg, Texas, as well as his many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Rob is preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, George Kavchak and Robert Swallick. Rob loved to travel and did so, traveling to many corners of the earth, taking from those he met and leaving a special part of himself behind. He taught those in his family to be humble and to face down what life sends your way with strength and a sense of humor. To those around him, he was always willing to lend a helping hand, share a smile, and most importantly, that it is okay to laugh at ourselves. As a humble man he taught us to face down the adversities that life might send your way with the humbleness and dignity. He taught us that having a handicap only made you a stronger person. His strength was a shining light to all. His sense of humor and friendship that was so easily extended to all will be missed. We will be comforted by the time we had to share with him and know that the strengths he showed us will help to make us a better person. In keeping with Rob’s wishes, he will be cremated and a funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 1:00 P.M. in the HEALD FUNERAL CHAPEL, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. The Reverend Dr. Marguerite Gage will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Sheldon. For those who wish, contributions in his memory may be made to the Humane Society of Chittenden County, 142 Kindness Court, South Burlington, Vermont 05403, per his request in honor of his love for animals, especially his dog, Molie. Private messages of condolence are welcome at www.healdfuneralhome.com. Rob, live on with God, we will meet up again beyond the rainbow!
