Obituary for Reverend Herbert F. Shipman

Swanton/Waterville – Reverend Herbert Francis Shipman, 84, died at his home on Thursday, May 15, 2014. He was born to the late Cecil R. and Ethelyn (McCuin) Shipman, October 8, 1929, in Jeffersonville, Vermont. He grew up on the family farm in Waterville, Vermont, attending Locke School in Waterville and graduating from Cambridge High School. He received a B.S. in Agriculture and an M.A. in Teaching from UVM and a M.Div. from Reformed Theological Seminary. He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann (Morse), whom he married on August 22, 1952; his children, Martha Shipman, Mary and Wayne Sweeney, Philip and Emilie Shipman, Norman and Vicky Shipman and Charles and Thy Shipman; his grandchildren, Carolann, Josiah, Charles, Abigail, and Everissa Sweeney; Luke, Jeremiah and his wife, Nicole Shipman; Tabor, Calah, Zebulun and his wife, Grace, Moriah, Micah, Samuel, Reuben and Rutherford Shipman; Hannah, MaryBeth, Sela and Soriya Shipman and his great-grandchildren, Seth, Esther, Stella, Cecily, Placid and Andrew Shipman and Ezekiel, Elisha, Naomi, Obadiah, Lydia, Rachel and Isaiah Shipman; his sister, Virginia Thompson and sisters-in-law, Marilyn Ciufo and Muriel Shipman and his brother-in-law, Bruce Chapin. He was predeceased by his daughter, Ruth Ann Shipman; grandson, Ezra Sweeney; great-granddaughter, Lia Shipman; his brother, Stanley Shipman; brothers-in-law, Reginald Thompson, Chauncey and Charles Morse and Alexander Ciufo; sisters-in-law, Shirley (Morse) Chapin and Marilyn (Dow) Morse and his mother-and father-in-law, Chauncey and Elnora Morse. He loved the Lord, his family, dancing, hunting, motorcycling, wood-crafting, sugaring and agriculture. He taught agriculture, was the Franklin County Vocational Technical Director, Addison Adult Education Coordinator, owned and operated an IBA dealership and was a member of the Northern New England Presbytery (PCA). He was involved in a number of organizations such as FFA, Young Farmers, Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department, local, state and national VoAg Teachers Association, Vermont Association of School Administrators, Vermont Directors of Area Vocational Centers, Georgia School Board, and the UVM Cooperative Extension Advisory Committee. He had a special love and concern for the gospel of Jesus Christ to go forth. To this end, he was installed as an evangelist, preached at many local churches and conducted a farmer’s Bible study. The family would like to especially thank Drs. Kevin Carey, Julie Adams and Max Bayard. Their skill and compassion was a blessing, comfort and help to both Herb and his family. Finally, the family wishes to express their deep gratitude to their friends and family for their love, prayers and support during this time. Herb’s family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday May 21, 2014, at 10:30 AM at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 422, St. Albans. Interment will be at 1:00 PM at Mountain View Cemetery in Waterville.
