Obituary for R.L. "Peewee" Lagasse

Champlain N.Y / Ehrenberg Arizona - R. L. Lagasse, better known as “Peewee” passed away peacefully on July 20, 2012, surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous five year battle with cancer. Peewee was born on March 26, 1942, in Frenchville, Maine. He was the son of the late Lauria and Omerilda (Landry) Lagasse. After graduating from Fort Fairfield High School in Fort Fairfield, Maine, he was married to his wife Barbara (Pelkey) who still survives him after 50 years of marriage. Together they raised four children. In his younger years, Peewee worked and lived in Maine with his family for 10 years before entering the U.S. Border Patrol in 1971. During his career he was stationed at Chula Vista, CA; El Cajon CA; Derby Line, VT; Beecher Falls, VT; and finally Swanton, VT, where he retired as Assistant Chief in 1994 after 23 years of service. He was also a member of the Elks, FORBPO: A Fraternal Order of and for Retirees of the U.S. Border Patrol, the Quartzsite Metal Detecting Club, and Gold Prospectors of America. Peewee was a loving, humorous man who had many talents. He loved carpentry and could build anything from furniture to houses, which his family grew up and lived in. He was meticulous and took great pride in everything he did. Peewee also loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and traveling. Time spent doing these things with his family and friends were his greatest joy. Following retirement, Peewee and Barbara traveled the United States extensively. Peewee fulfilled his dream of going to Alaska and spent a summer there. Mostly, they resided in Arizona during the winter and enjoyed Vermont and New York in the summer. While in Arizona they spent months camping with their Arizona friends, searching for gold, and exploring the desert on their four wheelers. Peewee is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara of St. Albans; their four children, Steven Lagasse and his companion, Holly Provencher, Shelly Walsh and her husband, Michael, and Scott Lagasse all of St. Albans, and Nathan Lagasse of Ehrenberg, Arizona; three grandchildren, Megan Lagasse, Marissa Lagasse and Vincent Yanez. He also leaves two brothers; Tom Lagasse and his wife, Diana, Charles Lagasse and his wife, Linda, and his sister Helen and her husband, Roger Milliard. He also leaves numerous other family members. He was predeceased by his parents Lauria and “Nina.” He will be greatly missed by his wife, family and friends. Peewee’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Christian Thomas and his staff at NMC, and those at Franklin County Home Health who provided such wonderful and respectful care during his final days. For those who wish, contributions in Peewee’s memory may be made to Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, VT 05478, or to the American Cancer Association, VT Division, Inc., 55 Day Lane, Williston, VT 05495. Private messages of condolence may be sent to Peewee’s family at 9 Brainerd St. St. Albans, VT. 05478. There will be no visiting hours. It was Peewee’s wish to have a private service at the convenience of his family. Arrangements are in the care of Heald Funeral Home.
