Obituary for Oskar B. Gronaas

Oskar B. Gronaas Georgia Shore - Oskar B. Gronaas, 89, a resident of Brooklyn, New York and a longtime summer resident of the Georgia Shore Road passed away Thursday, September 13, 2007, at the Haven Health Care following a brief illness. He was born in Bergen, Norway on November 23, 1917, the son of the late Albert and Mathilda (Solheim) Gronaas. In 1956, he married Marion Cleveland Rooney, who preceded him in death on February 28, 1993. Oskar left Norway at an early age and went to sea during World War II in the Merchant Marines. He retired in 1979 from the Exxon Mobil Company, where he was an oiler on their supertankers. Survivors include his three sisters; Birget Saethre of Risnes, Norway, Ingeborg Johansen of Bergen, Norway and Gerd Lyshaugen and her husabnd, Kjell of Oslo, Norway and several nieces and nephews also in Norway. In Vermont, survivors include, his brother-in-law, Robert Ellis of Georgia, his sister-in-law, Marjorie Cleveland of Fairfax , several nieces and nephews and his pet cat, “OB”. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at 10:00 A.M. at the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans with Sam Newton, Pastor of the Georgia United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Gronaas family lot in Georgia Plain Cemetery. Oskar’s family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-9 PM at the funeral home.
