Obituary for Michael Edward Benway
Milton - Michael “Benny” E. Benway, 65, passed away Monday, March 8, 2021 at the UVM MC following his courageous battle with COVID pneumonia.

Born January 30, 1956, he was a son of the late Edward Roy Benway & Mable Doris (Jones) Burns.

Mike was a 1974 graduate of BFA-St. Albans & for many years, he was employed as a commercial truck driver for Casella Waste Systems. Mike was a motorcycling enthusiast & was a proud member of the Super Hogs Motorcycle Club for many years. Family & friends were especially important to Mike; he treasured spending his time with them. His other interests included drumming, dogs, hockey, and music in general.

It sounds cliché but is so true: to know Mike was to love him. Everyone he met instantly liked him. He had a gruff biker exterior, but underneath was a heart and a tender side that was unmatched. He had an awesome universal sense of humor paired with a live free outlook on life. If Mike got a call for help from anyone, family or friend, he would drop everything and head their way. That love and care was not limited to those he knew though. If it were a stranger that needed help, his extended hand was there for them when they looked up. When he wasn’t spending time with his immediate family, he loved spending time with his club brothers, his “other” family. He loved every one of them with his whole heart. Mike was also an amazing drummer. Everyone loved listening to him play and agreed that he missed his calling, but he just loved to play and that was all he needed. Who knew that was all we needed too?

He spent many years coaching his son, Lucian in youth hockey and boxing. He loved teaching and helping people and was a fitness enthusiast. You could find him in the gym at least 3-4 times a week after working a 12-hour shift. He worked for Casella for many years and was proud to be a “trashman”. Everyone he worked with will miss his morning ritual of busting out in song over the radio. He loved his work and loved his family. Mikes zest for life was something to aspire to and will continue to live on within each of us, just as he would have wanted.

He leaves his loving partner, Laurie Thompson of Milton, his children, Lucian Benway & partner, Charlotte Pratt of Shelburne Bay Daniel Muir & wife, Nicole of Richmond, Shaylynne Thompson & partner, Chris Bouchard of So. Burlington, Chauntel Thompson & partner, Zeke Haskins of Fairfield &, his grandchildren, Brandon, Jayce, Avianah, Carter, Noah & Jaxon. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Ruckus, Paris and Bambi.

Mike also leaves his siblings, Linda Mason of St. Albans, Mark Benway of Swanton, Melissa Benway of Austin, TX and Edward Benway of Florida, a stepmother Peggy Sumner, stepbrothers, stepsisters, several uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Lisa Benway.

A public “Walk Thru” visitation, observing Covid Guidelines will take place Sunday, March 14, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be observed later this summer as “Benny’s Big Bash 2021”. We would love to have friends and family who want to share that day with us there. If you would like details and to be invited, please email

His interment will be in the family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery at that time.

For those who wish, memorial contributions in Mike’s name may be made to All Breed Rescue, 491 Industrial Ave., Williston, VT 05495. Mike was a dedicated volunteer of the rescue for over 8 years. Every dog that came through the rescue meant the world to him.
