Obituary for Maurice R. Greene

St. Albans – Maurice R. Greene, age 93, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, October 22, 2009, at Franklin County Rehab Center with his loving wife at his side. He was born in St. Albans November 16, 1915, son of the late Byron P. and Ethel (Howard) Greene. Maurice was married to Hortense Boisvert who preceded him in death in 1964. On January 28, 1968 he married Marjorie McDaniel who survives him. Maurice graduated from Bellows Free Academy in 1936. He was employed by A. N. Deringer, Inc. as a Customs Broker. He was the first active broker in Vermont. Because of that, he was often referred to as “Dean Greene” by his colleagues. An Army veteran of WWII, he was a member of Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion for over 60 years. He was a member of St. Albans Rotary Club and Franklin Lodge #4, F&AM, each for over 50 years. He was a former President of the Green Mountain Transportation Club and a member of the Board at St. Albans Free Library. He was a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Bellows Free Academy. He was an ardent Red Sox fan. Music was a large part of Maurice’s life. He played in the DeMolay Band as a youth and later in Sterling Weed’s Imperial Orchestra for over 25 years. He also played in Nichols Orchestra until 1970 and in the St. Albans Citizens Band. He played the string bass and sousaphone. Maurice was a life member of the First Baptist Church in St. Albans. At age 6 he walked 2 miles from Orchard Street to Congress Street to light five wood fires in the church each Sunday at dawn. For this chore, he was given a dime a week by Florence Merritt. He served the church as Chairman of the Board and Moderator as well as head usher for over 40 years. He was the second President of the Vermont Baptist Men. Maurice is survived by his wife of nearly 42 years, Marjorie, a son and his wife, Richard H. “Bunny” Greene and his wife, Sylvia “Kitty” of St. Albans; daughter-in-law, Judith W. Greene of Georgia; five grandchildren; Martha-Sue and Brian Bechard of Georgia, Mark S. Greene of Georgia, Cynthia and David Messier of Williston, Anthony “Tony” Greene of St. Albans, and Leah and Richard Chapko of Lakewood, Col. , two great grandchildren; Savanna and Tanner Bechard, sister-in-law, Ella B. Greene of Essex Jct. and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Hortense Boisvert Greene in 1964, a son, Russell P. Greene in 1999, a brother, Howard B. Greene in 1980 and a sister, Olive Loomis in 2003. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church on Congress Street in St. Albans. Interment will follow in the Greene family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the service.
