Mary Jane (Duffy) Smith St. Albans – Mary Jane Smith, a longtime St. Albans resident passed away on Wednesday evening, November 9, 2011, at her home with her loving family at her side. Born in Albany, New York on July 2, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Marie (O’Donnell) Duffy. On May 16, 1953, at Christ the King Church in Rutland, Mary Jane married Leo F. Smith, who preceded her in death on July 12, 2005. Mary Jane was a graduate of Mount Saint Joseph’s High School in Rutland and College of St. Elizabeth’s in Morristown, New Jersey with a degree in Social Services. She then worked for Social Rehabilitation Services and was also employed at the Northwestern Medical Center for fifteen years as a Unit Secretary. Mary Jane’s hobbies were reading and knitting, both of which created many of her friendships throughout her life. The gifts of her knitting are treasured by many. She also loved watching and listening to the sporting events of her many grandchildren. Her greatest source of pride and happiness were her seven children, their spouses and her grandchildren, Stephen and Susan Smith, Bryan, Hilary and McClean; Joanne and Kevin McGinn, Katherine, Maureen and Anne; Michael Smith, Cody, Amanda and Colin; Sally and Greg Sargent, Eddie and Kelly, Ellen and Charlie; Timothy and Denise Smith, Mackenzie, Duffy and Nellie; Kevin and Christine Smith and Molly and Shannon and Andy Maass, Danny, Claire and Peter. Mary Jane’s faithful canine companion, “Kramer†also survives her. She is also survived by her sister, Joanne Grace; her sisters-in-law, Lena Smith and Virginia Stapleton, many nieces and nephews and by many wonderful friends, especially her dear friend, Patty Walsh. The care and support given to Mary Jane and her family by loyal friends, Ione Reissig, Pat Reed and Kathy Tabor and Franklin County Home Health was very much appreciated. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Friday November 18, 2011, from 4 to 8 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St, St. Albans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday November 19th at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Immaculate Conception – St. Mary’s Parish on Fairfield Street. Interment will follow in the Smith family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery.
