Martha Stearns Dunsmore, RN St. Albans – Martha Stearns Dunsmore, RN, 89, a longtime resident of this community passed away Saturday December 17, 2011, at the Franklin County Rehab Center. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on October 7, 1922, the daughter of the late George E. and Mary (Emerson) Stearns. On September 14, 1945, in St. Albans, she married Dr. Murray K. Dunsmore, who preceded her in death on March 28, 1972. Martha received her nursing degree from the Worcester City Hospital and then served her country in the Army during World War II. She was stationed in a field hospital in Italy and was honorably discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant. She was a member of the Autonoe Club, a former Trustee and Chairperson on the Board of Trustees for Bellows Free Academy. She served on the Board of Directors of Franklin County Home Heath, was an auxiliary member of the former St. Albans Hospital, and served as a member of the NMC Board of Directors and Incorporators. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, and a member of Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion. Survivors include her six children and their spouses: Mary and Raymond Carney of Walpole, MA; David and Dorothy “Herk†Dunsmore of St. Albans; Nancy and Michael Janson of St. Albans; Kent and Jill Dunsmore of New York City; Diane Dunsmore and Tim Hanson of Ripton, VT; and Dody and Brian Susslin of Newburyport, MA. Martha is also survived by her grandchildren, Daniel Carney and his wife, Natalie; Emily Dunsmore and her fiancé, Caleb O’Connor; Adam Dunsmore; Nicholas Janson; Sophia and Murray Dunsmore; Meredyth Harple and her husband, David; and Emmet and Ian Susslin; her great granddaughter, Elena Carney; and her brothers, Donald Stearns and George E. Stearns, Jr. In addition to her parents and husband, Murray, Martha was preceded in death by her grandson, David A. Dunsmore. The family would like to extend thanks to the staff of Franklin County Home Health for the care they provided in Martha's home, and would also like to extend a very special thanks to the staff at Franklin County Rehab Center. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, December 22, 2011, from 5 to 7 PM and again on Friday from Noon to 1:00 at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street. A funeral service will be held on Friday December 23rd at 1:00 PM in the Heald Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Marguerite Gage officiating.
