Obituary for Marilyn M. Berthiaume

St. Albans – Marilyn M. Berthiaume a lifelong resident, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at the Northwestern Medical Center with her family at her side. Born in St. Albans on February 1, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Winifred (Carroll) McMahon. Marilyn was 87 years old. On May 19, 1952, at St. Mary’s Church she married, Phillip Joseph Berthiaume, who preceded her in death on July 11, 1989. Marilyn was educated in St. Albans and was a 1937 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. She then went on to do bookkeeping for the former St. Albans Hospital and Gladstone Shoe Store. She was an avid sports fan, especially the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Red Sox. She always looked forward to her travels to Maine and Cape Cod with her family, enjoyed watching John Wayne movies and was always interested in the St. Albans Railroad. In her down time, she enjoyed reading, knitting and a good crossword puzzle. Her greatest enjoyment was being with her family and was especially proud of being a great grandmother. Survivors include her daughters, Jean Carpenter and her companion, Michael Billings, of St. Albans and Barbara Gilbeau and her husband, Brad, of Sheldon; her grandchildren, Kyle Carpenter and his wife, Chelsey, Lindsey Farrar and her husband, Sam, Catherine Carpenter, Sarah Carpenter, James Austin, Jr. and Kayleigh Austin, as well as her great grandchildren, Rosalie Austin and Matthew Carpenter. Marilyn is also survived by her niece, Elizabeth Boudreau; her nephew and Godson, Peter McMahon, and nephews, Randy Bernard and his wife, Gail, Tim Bernard and John Bernard and his wife, Karen, and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Marilyn was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter, Karsyn; brother, Loring “Pete” McMahon and his wife, Mary Ellen; a niece, Joanne Buckles; and in-laws, Donald and Pat Bernard, Alma and Bernard Devarney and Maxine and Leroy Berthiaume. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Sunday, March 22, 2015, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street. A funeral service will follow visitation at 2:00 PM in the Heald Chapel. Interment will be later this spring at the family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, 55 Day Lane, Williston, VT 05495 or the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, VT 05495.
