Obituary for Margaret M Safford
Margaret M. "Peg" Safford St. Albans - Margaret M."Peg" Safford, age 85, a life long area resident of the Fairfield Community and a resident of King's Daughters Home in St. Albans during the past year passed away peacefully, Tuesday January 9, 2007, at the Northwestern Medical Center with her loving family at her side. She was born in St. Albans, Vermont on March 6, 1921, the daughter of the late George and Cora Mae (Steen) Hewitt. On October 12, 1946, in St. Albans Peg married Douglas A. Safford, who preceded her in death on June 30, 2004. She was a member of the East Fairfield Congregational Church, worked for the United States Postal Service and in 1982 retired as Postmaster in Fairfield. Peg had many wonderful memories to share. In earlier years her memories were of walking through the pasture behind her home looking for 4-leaf clovers, playing 500 with the local card club, making dolls and knitting dishcloths for the church craft sale, visiting with her neighbors, and tending to her many flower beds. In January of last year she made a new family and new memories with the wonderful staff and dear friends at King's Daughters Home, she especially looked forward to watching Jeopardy with Arlene Lapan and playing Skip-Bo with Addie Shedrick and Arlene. Survivors include her children, Cynthia E. Davis and her husband, Michael of Clovis, California, Mary Lemmer of Denver, Colorado, Steven J. Safford and his wife, Suzanne of Westford, Vermont, Heidi Richard and her husband, Daniel of St. Albans, five grandchildren; Eric Pare', Nicolas Safford, Kamie and Kelsey Richard and Hannah Lemmer, her four sisters; Shirley O'Lena and her husband, Harry of St. Albans, Eunice Church and her husband, Earll of Sarasota, Florida, Carolyn McEwen of St. Albans and Judith Marchessault and her husband, John of Alpena, Michigan, and her brother, George Hewitt and his wife, Jackie of East Pepperell, Massachusetts and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Douglas of fifty-seven years, Peg was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Harrington and a nephew, John Hewitt. The family wishes to thank so many people who have made Peg's life so full - Dr. Craig Ross and his staff, Mary Pappas and the caregivers and residents at King's Daughters. Mary Bostwick and the entire Franklin County Home Health Agency team, and Ann Simpson and the entire staff at the Northwestern Medical Center. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2007, at 11:00 A.M. in the Bakersfield Congregational Church with the Reverend Sue Marie Baskette officiating. There will be no visitation. Interment will be next spring in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery.
