Obituary for Lawrence J. Smith
St. Albans/Richford – Lawrence J. Smith,72, a longtime area resident passed away Sunday, January 23, 2011, shortly after arrival at the Northwestern Medical Center following a long illness. Born on January 24, 1938, in Berkshire, Vermont, he was the son of the late Ferdinand and Mary Louise (Larose) Smith. Lawrence was raised in Richford and graduated from the Richford High School. He entered the United States Air Force in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1960. On October 28, 1967, in Clinton, Massachusetts, Lawrence married Kathleen A. Shortsleeve, who survives him. They were residents of Clinton, Massachusetts and moved back to Vermont in 1975. Lawrence retired in 1994, after 17 years of service as a correctional officer at the Northwest State Correctional Facility. He enjoyed playing golf, bowling, baseball and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. Lawrence also coached Little League in both Richford and Clinton. Lawrence was a member of Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion, St. Albans Lodge # 1566, B.P.O.E., Richford High School Alumni Association and Franklin County Senior Center. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Kathleen of St. Albans; sons, Lawrence “Mickey” Smith and his wife, Molly E., of Newington, New Hampshire and Peter J. Smith of St. Albans; daughters, Diane Bruley and her husband, Jason, of St. Albans Bay and Pamala J. Smith of St. Albans; grandchildren, Anna, Mia and Nicholas Smith and Ethan and Grace Bruley. Lawrence is also survived by his sisters, Simone Frechette and husband, Robert, of Georgia, Theresa Towle and husband, Wellington, of St. Albans, Sister Cecile Smith of Winooski, Marie Ploof and husband, Donald, of Mansfield, Massachusetts, Rose West and husband, Lynwood, of Richford and Annette Montagne and husband, Frank, of St. Albans Town and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Mayhew and brothers, Gerald, Armand and Raymond Smith. Lawrence’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 26, 2011, from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday January 27th at 11:00 A.M. in Holy Angels Catholic Church on Lake Street.
