Obituary for Laura M. Dandurand

St. Albans - Mrs. Laura (Bernard) Dandurand passed peacefully on Tuesday night December 17th, 2013, at St. Albans Health Care Center. Laura was born April 22, 1924, in Beloeil, Quebec, Canada. She was raised on the family farm and had her later education at Lâecole Normal Des Soeurs St Joseph in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. She returned to Beloeil to teach in a one room schoolhouse, grades 1 through 8. Moving to Montreal with her sisters was her next adventure. She worked for La Revue Modern, a Montreal magazine, and later, met her husband, John Dandurand (predeceased) and moved to New Jersey. She proudly became a naturalized citizen of the United States yet still held a strong bond to her Canadian heritage. Although her spoken English was not good at the time, she was an excellent speller in both French and English and took a position at Foster and Wheeler as a proof reader on 5th Avenue in New York City. Soon after, she gave birth to her only child, Kathleen. In 1971 John & Laura, with daughter in tow, decided to move to Vermont, John's birth state. Here, John built beautiful homes and Laura earned her Real Estate Brokers license and sold the homes her husband built. They had a wonderful partnership and retired happily in St. Albans City. Her great joy of singing will be shared with the angels this Christmas. Laura is survived by her daughter, Kathleen and son in law, Greg Raymond; sisters, Alma and Pauline, Cousin, Therese, brother in law, Gerry Dandurand, Maria and George Dandurand, Madeline and Dorman Craig, Alexis Dandurand, Emanuel and Muriel Dandurand, Paul and Millie Dandurand, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, John Dandurand, brothers Jean, Paul, Gaston, Albert, sisters Jeanette, Lucile and Rhea, mother, Angelina (Charron) Bernard and father, Jean Baptist Bernard. Laura's joyful optimism and deeply rooted kindness will be missed by all. A memorial service and celebration of Laura's life will be held at a later date this spring. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer's Association, 300 Cornerstone Drive, Suite 128, Williston, VT 05495 or at Please visit to leave a private message for Laura's family.
