Obituary for Laura Emma Hilliker

Thaxton, VA/St. Albans, VT – Laura Emma Hilliker, 98, a lifelong resident of the St. Albans area, passed away on Wednesday evening, September 8, 2010, at the Springtree Health & Rehab Center in Roanoke, Virginia. She was born in St. Albans, April 1, 1912, the daughter of the late Clayton Warren McGowan and Mary Victoria (Naylor) McGowan. She was the widow of Luther H. Hilliker, who died July 25, 2009. They were married August 19, 1935, and celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary August 19, 2008. Laura was educated in St. Albans schools and graduated from St. Albans High School. She worked for F. W. Woolworth in St. Albans for many years and was an Avon Representative where she received several presidential awards and was a member of the President’s Club. She was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and belonged to the Phi Alpha Class of the church. She was also active in other civic activities including The Kings Daughters Home in St. Albans and volunteering at Verdelle Village, Redstone Villa and Holiday House Nursing Homes. Laura and Luther lived in Swanton for several years before moving to South Main Street. They moved to Thaxton, Virginia in 2005 to live with their son Brian and his wife Patricia. While living in Virginia, Laura enjoyed traveling, day trips with the family, and family gatherings. She loved to go to her great grandchildren's ball games and school events. Laura had a very special love for her great grandchildren. All of her great grandchildren were close to her and will cherish the memories of her love and the opportunity they had to help care for her. Laura’s survivors include her sons and their wives; Allen and Samera Hilliker of Grand Isle, VT and Brian and Patricia Hilliker of Thaxton, VA, three grandchildren; Tammy Hilliker of Thaxton, VA, Karen Hilliker of Salem, VA, and Kimberly French and husband, Bryan of Blue Ridge, VA; four great grandchildren; Zachary, Meghan, Kyle and Courtney . She also leaves a sister, Enid Blatchley of St. Albans. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as three brothers, Warren, Harold and Alton McGowan and a sister, Gladys Barker. Laura will be remembered for her sweet smile, her loving ways and gentle spirit. She touched the hearts of all who knew her and will be missed greatly. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2010, at 10:00 AM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Church Street. Laura’s family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be in the Hilliker family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery.
