Obituary for Kenneth Ray Smith

St. Albans Kenneth Ray Smith a longtime area resident passed away Saturday evening, December 19, 2015, at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, with his family at his side.


Born in East Liverpool, Ohio on March 1, 1934, he was the son of the late Clyde Kenneth Johnny Smith and Hilda Mae (Kearns) Smith. Ken was 81 years old.


Ken graduated from Grove City High School (PA), played American Legion baseball and at the age of 13 he won a state marble championship. He served his country during the Korean War in the United States Air Force. Upon his honorable discharge in 1957, he was a truck driver at the coal mines for Mooney Brothers and then worked for Bessemer in Grove City, PA, a diesel engine manufacturer. On January 3, 1966, he began a 24-year career with IBM in Essex starting in the fabrication shop as a machinist and working his way up to a Senior Lab Specialist where he worked on robotics.


Throughout his adult life he played softball which culminated in Vermont state and New England championships as well as a trip to the National Championships. He was an avid snowmobiler and loved to tinker with mechanical things, especially, cars and golf carts. Ken had an encyclopedic knowledge of baseball and was a diehard Yankees fan.


Ken had a lifetime passion for golf and was proud of his low handicap and was a longtime member of the Champlain Country Club.


He was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and former member of St. Albans Lodge 1566, B.P.O.E. and Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion.


Ken is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sally Trombley Smith of St. Albans; their children, Sue Ramsdell of Burlington and her husband, Greg, of Swanton, Rebecca Earle and her companion, Paul Rocheleau, of Swanton, Deborah Ford and her husband, Tim, of Jackson, NJ, Robert Smith of Phoenix, MD and Janice Smith and her fianc, David St. Pierre, of Swanton as well as 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.


In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his brothers, John Junior Bub Smith and Clyde Thomas Dove Smith.


Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Sunday, December 27, 2015, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 28th at 11:00 A.M at Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy as celebrant. Interment will follow in the family lot at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
