Obituary for Joseph Jean "Gene" Louis Meilleur

Grand Isle – Joseph Jean “Gene” Louis Meilleur, 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 10, 2010, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. He was born on August 19, 1930, to the late Francis Xavier and Euphrasine (Aube) Meilleur in the family farmhouse on Old Stage Road in Westford. He was the youngest of seventeen children. His family lived on various farms in Westford and Bristol before settling in Essex Junction. Gene lived most of his adult life in Alburgh, where people looked out for him and understood his special needs. He was an avid walker and his favorite hobby was collecting bottles, pens, key chains and calendars. Gene was a very active and energetic man who had a big heart and always was willing to spend what little money he had on others. He loved to sing from an early age and continued to serenade relatives on the holidays that always brought claps, hugs and lots of laughter. Gene worked at the Alburgh Auction House doing maintenance work by keeping the floors swept and clean. He took great pride in his work. The busier Gene was the happier he was! Gene also enjoyed a good meal, especially suet pie, pecan pie and a good cup of coffee. Gene fell and broke his hip on Christmas Eve 2003, which stripped him of his independence. For the next four and a half years he lived in the home of Marge Bluto, who lovingly took care of him. The past year of his life he spent with Judy and Ed Bluto who cared for him as if he were their own. Gene is survived by his sister, Bertha DeLaricheliere of Morrisville, Vermont; sisters-in-law, Rita Meilleur of Shelburne, Vermont and Aline Meilleur of Springfield, Massachusetts and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his six brothers, Armand, Ernest, Leo, Victor, Euclide and Gerard; his seven sisters, Dorina St. Dennis, Sister Alice Meilleur, Yvette Bashaw, Cecile Pouliot, Annette Cousino, Ida Hill, Theresa Bashaw and a special friend, Father Maurice Boucher. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2010, at 7:00 P.M. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Interment will be later this spring in the Meilleur family lot in Holy Family Cemetery in Essex. Gene’s family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Since his nephew, Jim Bashaw who predeceased him in August of 2000, along with his wife, Shari over saw Gene’s care for many years; contributions can be made to the Jim Bashaw Cancer and Catastrophic Illness Fund, c/o Northwestern Medical Center, Community Relations Office, 133 Fairfield Street, St. Albans, Vermont 05478. Assisting the Meilleur family is Raymond “Rett” Heald of the Heald Funeral Home in St. Albans. Private messages of condolence to Gene’s family are welcome at www.healdfuneralhome.com
