John P. Austin St. Albans - John P. Austin, 76, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 26, 2007, following an illness of 5 months. He was born in St. Albans May 23, 1931, the son of the late W. Minott and Mary (Marsh) Austin. John married Gertrude Holmes on July 6, 1957 in Adamant, VT. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. John retired in 1992 as a U.S. Customs Officer after 25 years of service. He was Port Director in Richford, VT. He served in the U. S. Army from 1950 to 1952 and was a member of Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Johnson State College in 1963 and was a teacher for 5 years. John was a member of Champlain Country Club and served on the Board of Directors for several years. He was a life member and former Secretary for St. Albans Lodge 1566, BPOE. He was an avid outdoors man and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and his camp at Fairfield Pond where he water skied last August at age 75. In addition to his wife, Gertrude, survivors include his son, Jay John Austin of Vancouver, BC, a daughter, Lynn Austin Laberge, her husband, Joe, and their children, Robbie and Jackie Laberge of Salt Lake City, Utah. He also leaves a cousin, Barbara Mills of Georgia, VT., sisters-in-law; Marjorie and Stanley St. John of East Montpelier, VT and Lorraine and Arthur St. Onge of Montgomery, VT, brothers-in-law, Clifton and Sonia Holmes of Richford, VT, Clayton and Gail Holmes of So. Burlington, VT, Clinton and Joyce Holmes of Richford, VT, Lawrence and Donna Holmes of Essex Jct, VT, and Raymond and Linda Holmes of Guilford, VT. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Jan Marie Austin in 1963. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 1:00 P.M. in the St. Albans Elks Lodge on Route 104 in St. Albans. Pastor Sam Newton of the Georgia United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot in Sheldon Village Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.
