St. Albans – John Edward Brault, 67, a lifelong resident of St. Albans, passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning, October 24, 2010 shortly after arrival at Northwestern Medical Center. He was born in St. Albans May 27, 1943, the son of the late Edward Brault and Claire (Gagne) Brault. On December 24, 1961, John married Nancy Minckler in St. Albans. John and Nancy owned and operated Brault’s Arctic Cat Dealership, first at their home on Fairfax Street and then on the Swanton Road. John’s illness forced them to sell the business in 2002. John served for 23 years in the military, in the Army and the Vermont National Guard. He was an expert marksman and was a member of the Marksmanship Training Unit for the Guard. He received the Distinguished Marksman Award and was a member of the All Guard Squad and the Vermont State Team. He also was on the Sportsman’s Club of Franklin County Shooting Team. He belonged to the National Rifle Association. A man of many talents, John built four houses and was a fine woodworker making an awards cabinet for the National Guard Shooting Team. He could make any motor run and enjoyed motorcycles, boats and snowmobiles. He was a hunter and enjoyed fishing with his grandson. John is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Nancy, his daughter, Julie Bessette, and her husband, Rick of St. Albans, and their children, Duncan and McKenna Bessette. He also leaves his mother, Claire Jette of Atlanta, GA, a sister and her husband, Christine and Christopher Lynch and their children, Maureen and Kathleen Lynch of Atlanta, GA, brothers-in-law, Robert Minckler of Rutland and Cecile Lockerby of Swanton; sisters-in-law, Jean Elliott and Sara Tatro both of Swanton and an aunt, Janet Bartlett of St. Albans. He will be missed by his special friends, John Assid and Lorraine Raleigh of Swanton, Fred and Nancy Little of New York, and his shooting team buddies. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Brault and stepfather, Richard Jette. A heartfelt thank you to Franklin County Home Health for their years of service to John and myself. In particular, Candace, Liza, Lynn, Susan, Sarah, Louise, Gloria, Debbie, Nurse Sharon, LTC Trisha, as well as Janet McCarthy. Without this wonderful, caring team we would not have been able to have our lives with John at home these past 8 years. Each lady brought her own personal touch to our lives. John loved them all. God bless. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 A.M. in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Church Street, St. Albans. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Interment will be at 2:00 P.M. in the new family lot in Riverside Cemetery in Swanton with full military honors. There will be no public visitation. Memorial contributions may be sent to Vermont Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center, Fletcher Allen Health Care, 111 Colchester Avenue, Burlington, VT 05401. Assisting John’s family is the Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans. Condolences and memories may be sent to www.healdfuneralhome.com.
