Obituary for Jerome Thomas Duffy

Swanton - Jerome Thomas Duffy, 85, died on November 17, 2015, surrounded by his family, close friends and the Church of the Nativity Parish Priest, Fr. Luke P. Austin.Jerome was born in Yonkers, NY, on March 6, 1930. He was raised in Tuckahoe, NY, with his two brothers George and Robert, by Viola and George Duffy. Jerome was a Patriot. His favorite saying, "God Bless America." At age 18, he joined the United States Marine Corps and achieved the rank of Corporal. After graduating from the University of Vermont and marrying his college sweetheart Anne Carr, he moved to Swanton Vermont where he and Anne raised six children. While making Swanton his permanent residence, Jerome was involved in multiple organizations including the St. Anne's School Board, the Volunteer Missisquoi Valley Rescue Squad, and the Swanton Village Trustees. Jerome was employed by the Saxon Industries/Boise Cascade Company from 1957 to 1987. After retiring, he enjoyed part-time work with the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.After retirement, Jerome kept busy with his family visiting children and grandchildren around the country. He took delight in boating on Lake Champlain with his grandchildren, many of whom believed he owned a great swim spot called Duffy's Sandbar. He also took great pride in maintaining his home spending hours riding around on his mower, thus giving him an opportunity to wave to passersby, or scold speeding vehicles. He was extremely appreciative of his kind neighbors, especially in his later years when they continued to maintain his property and provide assistance to Anne. Jerome is survived by his wife of sixty years, Anne Winifred Duffy. He also leaves behind Beth Vallier of Tucson, Arizona, Bobbi and Dave Ketcham of Rochester, New Hampshire, Brigid and Max Jeffrey of Tucson, Arizona, Becky and Jim Manahan of St. Albans, Vermont, Tom Duffy of Richford, Vermont, and Brenda and Eric Luedders of Hollis, Maine. Jerome was very proud of his grandchildren Pat and Ben Vallier, Greg and wife Stephanie Ketcham, Will and Ali Ketcham, Chris, Lizzy, and Anne Jeffrey, Maigh and husband Justin Wright and Tim Manahan, Liam and Michaella Duffy, and Owen Luedders.Jerome was predeceased by his parents, George Edward Duffy and Viola Marie Duffy, (nee Norton), his brothers, George and his wife, Joan, and Robert Duffy, his son-in-law, Michael P. Vallier, and a very close friend, Cam Larrabee.Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Sunday, November 22, 2015, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the HEALD FUNERAL HOME, 87 South Main St., St. Albans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 23rd at 11:00 A.M. from the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. The Reverend Luke P. Austin will be the celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in the family lot in St. Marys Catholic Cemetery.
