Burlington: Janice Marion Sawyer passed away on October 23, 2009 in Burlington, VT. Janice was born in Lawrence, MA on September 14, 1947 and grew up in Methuen, MA. She attended Methuen schools, including what was then called Tenney High School and then went on to a collegiate education at Wheaton College in Massachusetts. In 1966, Janice initiated a career with the U.S. Department of Labor, first as an intern in Boston and then as a career civil servant located in Boston, New York and Philadelphia, culminating as the Superintendent of the Department of Labor Headquarters Building in Washington, DC. Upon her retirement, Janice resided along the banks of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and Stuart and Fort Pierce in Florida. In 2004 she moved to the New North End of Burlington, VT to be closer to family. Janice was predeceased by her parents, William and Marion Sawyer of Methuen, MA and her longtime partner, Bert Lewis of Silver Springs, MD and Stuart, FL. Janice is survived by her brother and his spouse, William and Barbara Sawyer of St. Albans, VT, her nephews, Adams Sawyer of Burlington, VT, Brian Sawyer of Boston, MA and Will (Chip) Sawyer and his spouse, Alisha of St. Albans, VT and their sons, (grand nephews) Liam and Andrew Sawyer. She is also survived by extended family, Bob and Jan Whitman of Middlebury, VT. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Anyone wishing to do something in Janice’s memory could do so through a donation to the National Audubon Society or any other group dedicated to the well-being of animals.
