Obituary for James Robert Arthur

James R. Arthur Shelburne/St. Albans - James R. Arthur passed away on Wednesday March 5, 2008. He was born in Ticonderoga, New York on September 30, 1913, the son of James H. and Harriet (Porter) Arthur. He formerly resided in St. Albans, and was employed by IBM for fourteen years in Burlington and Boca Raton, Florida. Prior to moving to Vermont, Jim was a Crew Chief at General Electric Flight Test Operation in Scotia, New York, where he was involved with new innovations in helicopters, including the building and testing of the first gyrocopter. There he earned his commercial Pilot Rating in Helicopters, even though he had never flown a fixed-wing aircraft. As Jim’s family grew in Scotia, New York, he realized that he would need a bigger house. He decided to build a brick home on his own. Although he was an expert mechanic and metal smith in the Navy, he was not knowledgeable about house construction. However, by observing others and doing his own research, he built a brick home for his family in the evenings and on weekends, while still working at his daily job. When Jim visited the house many years later, the current owner complimented him on a “trouble-free house”. Jim was known as an enthusiastic story teller. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and proudly served as a Chief Petty Officer and air crewman aboard the U.S.S. South Dakota, also known as “Battleship X”. He and his fellow crew members were awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for outstanding heroism in their action during the Battle of Santa Cruz. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Flora; daughter Flora Hurteau and husband, Timothy of Georgia; grandsons Matthew and wife, Sarah of Arizona; Timothy J. and wife, Lisa, great-grandson, Porter of Georgia; son, Michael and wife, Maddi, of Essex Junction; grandson, Jeffrey and wife, Nancy and great-granddaughter, Molly of Colorado; granddaughter, Kelly of Colorado; daughter Maureen Miller and husband, Edwin of California; grandsons, Nathaniel, Zachary and Jacob all of California; son, James C. and wife, Ikuko of California; and granddaughter, Yuri of Washington, DC. A Celebration of Jim’s life will take place at the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at 1:00 PM with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy, Pastor of Holy Angels Church officiating. Jim’s family will receive friends following the service until 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Interment will be this spring at the Vermont Veteran’s Cemetery in Randolph. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vermont 05478. Messages of condolence to the Arthur family are welcome at
