St. Albans - James O. Fendley, 88, a longtime resident of this area, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2010, at the St. Albans Healthcare and Rehab Center following a lengthy illness. Born on May 4, 1921, in Gordo, Alabama, Jim was the son of the late Cornelius E. and Maggie L. (Reece) Fendley. He was married to the former Barbara Barnes, who preceded him in death on October 5, 1987. Jim served his country proudly during World War II, receiving his honorable discharge from the United States Air Force in November of 1945. He retired on June 1, 1982, after thirty-six and half years of service as a Locomotive Engineer with the former Central Vermont Railroad. Jim was a very active member of St. Paul=s United Methodist Church as head usher, was on the administrative board of the church and a member of the Phi Alpha Class, was a Past Master and Past Secretary of Franklin Lodge # 4, F&AM, Past High Priest of Champlain Chapter #1, Past Illustrious Master of Columbus Council #1, Past Commander of Lafayette Commandry #3, a member of the York Rite Bodies where he received the Cross of Honor and Scottish Rite, Grand Lodge of Vermont, Vermont Consistory 32nd Degree, Northern Vermont Shrine Club, Mount Sinai Shrine, Past Patron and Past Deputy District Governor Patron of Swanton, # 11, Order of Eastern Star. He also was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Central Vermont Railway Veterans Association, Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion, Robert E. Glidden Post # 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and former Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America. Survivors include his son, John D. Fendley and his wife, Lee, of Loganville, Georgia; his five grandchildren, Shannon Frechette and her fiancé, Scott Bolio and his son, Quentin, Stacey Fendley, Shawn, Robert and Donavan; his daughter-in-law, Dawn Fendley; his great grandchildren, Jade, Libbey and Ethan Frechette and Brooklyn St. Francis; his step-grandson, Tim; his sister, Willie Algarotta of Virginia, many nieces, nephews and close friends, Flossie Vernal and Sandy Bicknell. In addition to his parents and his wife, Barbara, Jim was preceded in death by his son, James A. Fendley and brothers, Vester, Marvin, Curtis, Eulie, Edgar and John and his sister, Evelyn Carlson. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at 11:00 A.M. in St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Church Street. Interment will be later this spring in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Jim's family will receive friends on Monday from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street.
