Obituary for James E. B. Aitchison

James E. B. Aitchison, Jr. St. Albans/Montpelier - James E. B. Aitchison, Jr., 67, of Lebel Drive, St. Albans, passed away at his home on Friday, April 18, 2008, surrounded by his family, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Granby, Quebec, Canada on October 2, 1940, the son of James E. B., Sr. and A. Shirley (O’Keefe) Aitchison. James married Dorothy A. Denis on November 3, 1962 at St. Augustine’s Church in Montpelier. They made their home in Montpelier, later moving to Essex, then returned to Montpelier and later moving to St. Albans. He was a 1958 graduate of St. Michael’s High School in Montpelier, and a 1963 graduate of Lyndon State College, Lyndonville, VT. His graduate education included a Masters Degree in Education Administration 1968, St. Michael’s College, Winooski, VT and from 1978 to 1984 he attended the national Academy of School Executive Institutes and in 1984 the IBM Education Executive Program. His professional career began in 1963 as a Teaching Principal at Woodbury Elementary School, Woodbury, VT through 1965. He was a teacher at Spaulding Graded School, Barre, VT from 1965 -1966, he then took the Principal’s position at the East Montpelier Central School, East Montpelier, VT from 1966 -1968. From 1968-1972 he was Principal of the Williston Central School, Williston, VT, Assistant Superintendent, Orange Washington Supervisory Union(included the towns of Barre Town, Orange, Washington and Williamstown) from 1972-1978. From 1978-1983 he was Superintendent of Schools, Orange North Supervisory Union (towns of Orange, Washington and Williamstown). 1983 - 1993 Superintendent, Franklin Central Supervisory Union (City of St. Albans, St. Albans Town and Fairfield). He retired in 1993. After retirement, he took the position of Educational Administration Consultant at the Washington West Office. For one year he was affiliated with the Vermont Education Investment Trust. President, Central Vermont Principal Association, 1967; Central Vermont Principals Association 1963-65, 1966-68, Northwest Vermont Principals Association, 1968-72, Executive Board, Vermont Elementary Principals Association, 1967, Member Committee on Revision of State Elementary School Standards, 1967, Member, Curriculum Committee for Planning Construction of Union High School #33, Twinfield, VT, Member, Curriculum committee for Planning Construction of Union High School #32, East Montpelier, VT, Chairman, Williston Design for Education Committee, Williston, VT, 1969-71, Consultant, Vermont Design for Education to assist Vermont School Districts development of Local Design, 1969, Committee Member - Teacher education and Professional Standards V.E.A., 1970, Winooski Valley Superintendents Association, Vermont Superintendents Association, New England Superintendents Association, American Association of School Administrators, Vermont Superintendents Association Resolution committee, 1977-78, Legislative Committee-Vermont Superintendents Association, 1978-83, Trustee-Executive Board-Vermont Superintendents Association, President, Winooski Valley Superintendents Association, 1980-81, Secretary/Treasurer, Winooski Valley Superintendents Association, 1979-80, President Elect, Vermont Superintendents Association 1985-86, President, Vermont Superintendents Association, 1986-87, Phi Delta Kappa, New England Superintendents Association, Delegate, American Association of School Administrators General Assembly. James was a member of the St. Albans Rotary Club, Serving as Director of St. Albans Rotary 1986-87. From 1994-97 he was a member of the Board of Directors, Northwestern medical Center. James loved golfing with friends and family, sailing on Lake Champlain and spending weekends with family at the family camp in South Hero. Mr. Aitchison is survived by his wife, Dorothy and three children, son Brian and Becky Aitchison of Berlin, VT, two daughters, Cheryl Karparis of Montpelier and Debra Aitchison of Essex, four grandchildren, Emily and Calvin Karparis and Elizabeth and Connor Aitchison. He is also survived by four sisters, Mary Ann and Demetrios Balderes of PonteVedra Beach, FL, Kathryn and Eugene Wasik of Williamstown, VT, Shirley and James Perrault of Scottsdale, AZ and Virginia Aitchison of Arvada, Colorado. He is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Daniel R. Aitchison. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 22, at 11:00 A.M. in St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Montpelier. The Pastor, Father Michael Augustinowitz, will be the celebrant. There will be no visiting hours, but the family will receive friends in the church hall following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Hospice Program of Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, VT 05478 , or American Cancer Society, P.O.
