Obituary for Hubert A. Dowling, Jr.

St. Albans – Hubert A. Dowling, Jr., 86, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, October 4, 2008, at The Arbors in Shelburne. His loving family was at his side. He was born in St. Albans October 15, 1921, the son of the late Hubert A. Dowling, Sr., and Mary Lena (Flanagan) Dowling. On June 23, 1956, Hubert married Claire Ashline in St. Mary’s Church. Claire died June 28, 2006. Hubert retired as President of Dowling’s Inc., wholesale distributors, in 1989. He was a communicant of St. Mary’ Catholic Church. He graduated from The University of Vermont and received his Masters Degree from Columbia University. He served as a “Code breaker” in the U. S. Army Air Corps during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross and was Chairman of the Blood Drives for many years. He was a member of the Owl Club, The Vermont Writers Guild, and the Franklin County Historical Society. He served on the board for the St. Albans Free Library. A renaissance man, he enjoyed everything from fly fishing to musical theater, football to poetry, and traveling and gardening. He took many opportunities to learn, enjoy, and contribute to the world around him through his love of history, sense of adventure, and many charitable works. Hubert’s wit and humor will be remembered and missed most of all. Hubert is survived by two sons; Mark Dowling and his partner, Chris Perrera of Colchester, and Michael D. Dowling and his fiancée, Karen Jette of Essex Jct. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Dorothy Dowling of St. Albans and a brother- in- law, Karl and his wife, Heather Ashline of Williston, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Claire, his parents, two brothers, John and Francis Dowling and a sister, Helen Charbonneau. Hubert’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at the Arbors in Shelburne and the caregivers who helped Hubert so much before he entered the Arbors. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at 11:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with Father W. André Houle as celebrant. Interment will follow in the family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. in Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to American Red Cross, Northern Vermont Chapter, 29 Mansfield Ave., Burlington, VT 05401 or Alzheimer’s Association, 172 N.
