Franklin-Howard C. “Howie†Rhodes, Jr, 74, a summer resident of Lake Carmi, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2010, at Fletcher Allen Health Care with his loving family at his side. Born on May 14, 1935, in St. Albans, Howie was the son of the late Howard C. “Doc†Rhodes, DVM and Harriet (Davis) Rhodes. On April 11, 1970, he married the former Carolyn Moore, who survives him. Howie was a 1953 graduate of Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans and then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1965 he began his career with the US Customs Service, retiring in 1998. Howie also owned and operated South Main Grocery in St. Albans, Dairytown in Enosburg and had various properties throughout Franklin County. He enjoyed playing and watching golf, working in his garden and loved to be with his family. He also was a member of the Franklin Watershed Committee taking a great interest in Lake Carmi, an avid bird watcher and loved to identify the wildlife on the Lake. Howie and Carolyn would spend their winters in Punta Gorda, Florida. Survivors include his wife of forty-years, Carolyn of Franklin, their children, Gregory Jenkins and his wife, Beth Lemaire - Jenkins and their son, Zachary of Burlington; Aaron Rhodes and his wife, Sonya and their children, Anastasia and Emmah of Northfield; Adam Rhodes of St. Albans and Melissa Arcand and her children, Maggie Johnson and Ileah Arcand of St. Albans and his brother, John Rhodes of Georgia. Howie is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Moore of Derby Line, Roger and Colleen Beauregard of Newport, Lawrence “Buzz†and Lou Moore of Punta Gorda, Florida and several nieces and nephews. Howie’s family will receive friends on Tuesday April 13, 2010, from 4 to 7 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Vermont Chapter, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, VT 05495, the Salvation Army, 64 Main Street, Burlington, VT 05401 or to a Charity of One’s Choice.
