Obituary for Herbert L. Mitchell

St. Albans – Herbert L. Mitchell passed away at sunrise this Memorial Day weekend with his son, Lewis Mitchell and granddaughter, Renee Chevalier at his side. Herb was 90 years old and survived by his wife of 68 years, Reatha (Hope) Mitchell, whom he cared for at his home for 8 years. Together in their spare time they loved to play cribbage. Herb was born on July 21, 1924 in Acworth, New Hampshire and served in World War II and was honored with the Purple Heart twice and a Silver Star along with many other awards. He was a member of Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion, Robert E. Glidden Post # 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars and their Funeral Honor Guard having attended over 200 funerals over the years. Herb and his family owned and operated the Foundry Machine Shop along with Mitchell Auto Shop for about 30 years. Legend has it that people would say, “If Herb Mitchell couldn’t fix it, no one could.” He was community oriented and took on many projects including rebuilding the Bells of St. Luke’s Church, installing the first motorized rope tow at Hard’ack ski area, and restoring the fountain in Taylor Park. Other activities that Herb enjoyed were hunting at his deer camp in Fayston, “fishing at his favorite secret fishing hole”, camping at Lake Eden and also enjoyed fly tying in his free time. During his life, Herb had 2 sons, Lewis and Bill Mitchell who survive him. He is also survived by his daughters-in-law, Linda Mitchell and Carrie Kittell, along with 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, May 29, 2014, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A funeral service will then be held at 3:00 PM in the Heald Chapel with the Reverend David S. Veale officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery.
