Obituary for Henry J. Gratton
Henry J. Gratton St. Albans - Henry J. Gratton, 86, a former resident of St. Albans and for the past fifteen years of Largo, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at the Woodside Hospice following an illness of several months. He was born in St. Albans, Vermont on April 30, 1920, to a family of twelve brothers and sisters. Henry was the son of the late Alphonse and Alma (Larocque) Gratton. He was brought up and worked on the Gratton Family Farm on the Fisher Pond Road. He later moved onto masonry and carpentry. He followed this by working for General Electric in Burlington, then to Fellows Gear Shapers of Springfield, Vermont and eventually worked and then retired from Hamilton Standard/United Technologies Corporation in Connecticut. While at Hamilton Standard, Henry would work on projects such as the fuel cells for the SR71 (Black Bird) and then the United States Astronaut’s Life Support Back-Packs that were used to land on the moon. He even had to repair one the day before lift-off. During his years in Connecticut, Henry learned to fly and handmade his entire airplane, the Jurca Tempette in his basement. He was flying up until his illness. He was an avid hunter, enjoying his trips to Montana and Colorado, an avid fisherman and enjoyed woodworking, scuba diving and oil painting, which many of his family received thru out the years. Survivors include his son; Paul Gratton and his wife, Marie of Albemarle, North Carolina, his daughter; Genie Fortier and her husband, Thomas of Concord, North Carolina, his nine grandchildren; Eric, Anita, Roy, Brenda, Patrick, Kyla, Earl Danny, and Paul, his four great grandchildren; Patrick, Sabrina, Cody and Nathan, his three sisters; Theresa Garceau, Pearl Lumbra and Lillian Rocheleau all of St. Albans, his three brothers; Raymond of Montgomery and Leo “But Nut” and Ernest both of St. Albans and many, many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Henry was predeceased by two sons; Patrick in 1948 and Earl in 1992, three brothers; Girard “Buddy”, Oliver “Joe” and Maurice “Baldy”, and two sisters; Lucille Racette and Jeanette Leadbeater. Funeral services will be held on Friday September 8, 2006, at 11:00 A.M. in Holy Angels Catholic Church with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Henry’s family will receive friends on Thursday, September 7, from 5-8 P.M. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial’s may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942. Messages of condolence are welcome at
