George Lawrence Gilbert, of Mora, Minnesota, formerly of St. Albans, Vermont, passed away on October 1, 2014 at the age of 80. George was born on July 21, 1934 in Burlington, Vermont to Lawrence and Helen (Vincelette) Gilbert. He grew up and graduated from high school in St. Albans, VT and attended college on a baseball scholarship at the University of Vermont. After three years at UV he joined the army and served for three years at Fort Riley, Kansas. After his time in the army he finished his college career at Mankato State University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1960. He taught math and coached for five years at his old high school in St. Albans and another five years at Shattuck Military School in Faribault, Minnesota. While at Shattuck he coached his basketball team to win the state championship for three years in a row. At this time he saw an opportunity to try something different. He became a salesman for Western Petroleum Oil Co., owned a dog food route, a milk route, planted and sold Christmas trees at his farm in Finlayson, MN and successfully owned and operated several convenience stores. George was an avid sports fan playing baseball, basketball, and football. He also loved to play golf. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Arizona and Nevada. He had an appreciation for art and collected coins. He married Diane Bacon in 1960 and they had three children. He later married Jeanette Holznagel in June of 1983. He enjoyed and cherished spending time with his family. George was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Wendell Charles Gilbert. George will be greatly missed by his wife, Jeanette; and his children Teri Sissel of Cedar Rapids, IA, Ty Gilbert and his wife Julie of Rush City, MN, and Susan Franson of Forest Lake, MN; step children Joanie Posch and her husband David of Braham, MN, Michael Holznagel and his wife Linda of Mora, MN and Donald Holznagel and his wife Kristi of Mora, MN; 16 grandchildren Isabel, Lily, Haylie, Sam, Sara, Cassandra, Jack, Lindsay, Daniel, Erik, Katie, Ashley, Keith, Samantha, Kaitlin, and Corey; 2 great-grandchildren Hannah and Henry; and niece Elizabeth Jensen. Memorial service was held on Wednesday, October 8th at First Presbyterian Church in Mora with Rev. Rick Marcy officiating. Music was provided by D.B. Johnson and Donald Holznagel. Honorary Urn Bearers were Dale Quist, Jon Youngblom, Jim Berglund, Howard Ledin, Bill Yost, Dick Haavisto and Marcus Althoff. Inurnment was at Fish Lake Cemetery in Mora and St. Albans Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora.
