St. Albans - George J. Kavchak, 91, a resident of this area for the past nine years, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2008, at his home with his loving family at his side. Born on May 26, 1917, in Port Reading, New Jersey, George was the son of the late Frank and Mary Kavchak. On April 27, 1938, in St,. Mary’s Church in South Amboy, New Jersey, George married the former Catherine Quinlan, who preceded him in death on July 12, 2007. Prior to relocating to Vermont, George was employed for many years as a crane operator with the National Lead Company in Sayreville, New Jersey, owned and operated the East Jersey Lumber and Coal Company in Metuchen, NJ and then along with his son, “Sonny†they owned and operated Lincoln Heating and Cooling Company in Jackson, New Jersey. He enjoyed wine making, hunting and fishing. George also enjoyed listening to and playing music. He especially enjoyed playing the harmonica and fiddle and was a former member of the Harmonicats. For several years, George also operated a mink farm in New Jersey. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in St. Albans and a former member of the Odd Fellows in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Survivors include his two daughters; Kathleen Swallick of St. Albans and Barbara Schoen- Jahngen and her husband, Robert of Colchester, five grandchildren; Scott, Tammy, Tracy, Lorilei and Jack, nine great grandchildren; Greg, Cory, Sarah, Katy, Jamie, Jessica, Joseph, James and Ashley, two great-great grandchildren,six step-grandchildren, special friends; Emily and Alex McDougall of Clark, New Jersey and Mary and John Standowski of Jackson, New Jersey and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, and wife, Catherine, George was preceded in death by his son; George “Sonny†Kavchak on June 18, 2004 and his son-in-law, Robert J. Swallick on June 1, 2004. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 18, 2008, at 11:00 A.M. in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Church Street with the Reverend Herman Benjamin officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 PM at the family lot in St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Sheldon. George’s family will receive friends on Sunday from 7-9 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street.
