CAMPBELL, Dr. Frederick W. ‘Sandy’, Jr., M.D. Georgia, VT - On October 31, 2006 DR. FREDERICK W. ‘SANDY’ CAMPBELL, JR., M.D., age 81, died peacefully in Burlington VT following a short illness, surrounded by his beloved wife and sons. Sandy Campbell was a tireless and selfless healer and humanitarian, cheering and charming the lives of countless patients and community members during a long and respected career as a general surgeon and trauma care physician. Since 1969 he had made his home in Georgia VT and had practiced medicine in nearby St. Albans VT. Sandy was born in Detroit and raised in Grosse Pointe Farms MI, He served in the Canadian Infantry in World War II. He graduated from the Hotchkiss School, Yale University, and Cornell University Medical College. His career and life found him settled in the Detroit and Minneapolis metropolitan areas as well as Toronto and Collingwood Ontario, Canada before he made his final home in Vermont. He made a second home on Narrows Island on Lake Temagami Ontario, where he spent most of his summers. He was a self-taught and experienced civil engineer by avocation, having designed and built with his own hands various of his residences, his own live steam railroad, including locomotives and rolling stock, elaborate stone walls, patios and bridge spanning the Mill River which flowed through his property. He was an avid gardener and reader. In all avenues of his life, his projects were never truly transformed into accomplishments until he could give and share them with his friends and relations. Sandy is survived by his wife of 43 years, Margaret Gaffran Campbell, also of Georgia VT, his sister Mary Elizabeth Abeles of Lexington MA and his three sons: Dr. Frederick W. Campbell III, M.D. of Traverse City MI, William Y. Campbell of Grosse Pointe Farms MI and Ian E. Campbell of Cambridge VT, as well as seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his daughter Susan D. Campbell, Esq. of Baltimore MD. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, November 5 at 2 PM at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington, 152 Pearl Street, Burlington VT.
