Frederick W. Bliss a longtime area resident passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at the St. Albans Healthcare Rehab Center.
Born on April 15, 1927, in St. Albans, he was the son of the late William and Hazel (Wright) Bliss. Fred was 88 years old.
On June 8, 1950, in Underhill, he married Irene White, who preceded him in death on January 19, 2015.
Fred grew up and worked on the Bliss Dairy Farm in Georgia; he was a 1945 graduate of Bellows Free Academy and then furthered his education at Vermont Technical College in Randolph. He faithfully served his country in the United Sates Navy during World War II. Most of his working career he was an independent truck driver. Fred was a member of the United Methodist Church in Milton, Franklin Lodge # 4, FAM, Mount Sinai # 3, Shriners, St. Albans Lodge 1090, L.O.O.M. and was a regular volunteer at Carepartners.
He was very active in Veteran affairs in Franklin County. He was a member of Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion, Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a volunteer DAV Driver to White River Junction several times a month. He was instrumental in the formation of the Funeral Honors Detail representing Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion and Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Fred also served in several capacities for the Town of Georgia, including Fire Chief from 1952-1953, as Town Constable and also on the Zoning Board.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan Mitchell of Georgia; his grandchildren, Kathy (Mitchell) Mathieu and her husband, Travis, of Fairfax and Kevin W. Mitchell of Georgia, as well as his great grandchildren, Kayla and Kristen Mathieu and Jared and Kaleb Mitchell. Fred is also survived by his sister, Carol Morrison and her husband, Richard, of New York and Florida and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Irene, Fred is preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Drinkwater on April 7, 1978, brother, William Bliss, Jr and sister, Marguerite Gates.
A graveside service followed by Military Honors will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2016, at 2:00 PM. at the family lot in Georgia Plain Cemetery, Stonebridge Road, Georgia. Pastor Jeffrey Cornwell will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, Fred requested that contributions go to The Shriners Hospitals, c/o Mount Sinai Shriners, P.O. Box 742, Montpelier, Vermont 05601-0742.
