Francis English Johnson St. Albans: Francis English Johnson, age 89, died at the Northwestern Medical Center on Saturday, April 16, 2011, following a brief illness. He was born on October 12, 1921 at the Sherwood Sanitarium in St. Albans to the late Gaylord S. Johnson and Josephine (English) Johnson. He attended St. Mary’s Grammar School and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1939. All the while attending St. Mary’s Schools, Francis served as an altar server. His first job was as a bookkeeper at the Fisher Coal & Ice Co. In 1942, he was called into the U.S. Army for service in World War II, serving until 1946, including overseas in England and France. He then worked for Whiting & Heald and later the Central Vermont Railway, also serving on active duty in the Air Corps at Ethan Allen Air Force Base between 1950 and 1951. From 1960, until his retirement in 1983, he worked for the U.S. Customs Service. On June 17, 1961, he was united in marriage to Marion T. Hemond in Holy Angels Church. Francis is survived by his wife Marion, his sons, Michael, Thomas, Patrick and his wife Holly (Clifford), all of St. Albans and David of North Bethesda, Maryland. He is further survived by his sister-in-laws, Georgette Johnson of Highgate, Helena Hemond of St. Albans and Rose West of Richford and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in death by one brother, Robert M. Johnson, infant son Paul and in-laws, Alphege and Celina Hemond. Francis lived on Fairfield Street all his life. He enjoyed his long retirement, much of it spent perusing flea markets and garage sales with his wife Marion, always looking to add to his collection of Vermont milk bottles. He was an honorary life member of the American Legion Green Mountain Post No. 1 and a member of Robert E. Glidden Post No. 758 VFW. He was an avid follower of the Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots.
