Obituary for Florence Lillian "Flo" Cummings

St. Albans – Florence L. “Flo” Cummings, a longtime resident of St. Albans passed away, Tuesday, January 6, 2015, in the comfort of her home. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 15, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Jacqueline (Principe) Porcella. Flo was 85 years old. She was educated in Massachusetts where she received her degree as an X-Ray Technician. On April 11, 1957, she married Stanley R. Cummings and moved to St. Albans. She was employed for several years at the former St. Albans Hospital in the X-Ray Department. She later was employed many years at I.B.M. Florence was a longtime communicant of Holy Angels Parish, was a volunteer at the Northwestern Medical Center and enjoyed attending the annual church suppers in the Franklin County Area, as well as the weekly meals at the Franklin County Senior Center. Flo enjoyed traveling, twice “crossing the pond” to tour Spain, Italy and France. While attending her youngest son’s wedding in Antigua, she was bitten by the Scuba Diving bug. At the age of 66, she became a certified diver. She returned to the Caribbean several times on diving adventures. Her e-mail address contained the moniker “reeflady”. Although Flo lived in Vermont some 60 years, her soul never left Boston. Paul Revere and the Boston Pops held a pope like status. She never completely shed her accent either. A subject her sons loved to chide her about. She enjoyed visiting her many relatives in the greater Boston area, where she was always addressed by her childhood nickname, “Toodie”. Always the Matriarch, Florence adored her three sons and considered them to be her greatest contribution to the world. To say she was proud would be an understatement. Being true to her Italian heritage, Flo never stopped mothering the boys and any disagreement was quickly ended with her trump card catch phrase of, “I’m the Mother”. Her culinary skills were legendary and naturally Italian cuisine was her specialty. Survivors include her three sons and their wives, Scott and Wendy of Tampa, Florida; Steve and Kathleen of St. Albans and Jay and Jennifer of Swanton, as well as two grandchildren, Danielle and Dean and a great-granddaughter, Kiera. She is also survived by many extended family members in the Boston area. In addition to her mother, Florence was preceded in death by her former husband, Stanley R. Cummings and sister, Marilyn Foster. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 15th, at 11:00 AM in Holy Angels Catholic Church, 245 Lake Street, with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy as celebrant. Interment will be held later this spring in the Mount Calvary Cemetery. Messages of condolence to Florence’s family are welcome at www.healdfuneralhome.com.
