Obituary for Flora Antoinette Pompa Arthur

Burlington – Flora Arthur left this world on Sunday, October 17, 2010, at the Starr Farm Nursing Center in Burlington, after struggling with challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. Throughout the years since her diagnosis, Flora maintained her sweet disposition and expressed gratitude to caregivers and family members, even as verbal communication was no longer possible. Flora was born a city girl in Brooklyn, NY in 1920. Her parents emigrated from Italy through Ellis Island and raised Flora, her three brothers and two sisters in the United States. After graduating from Eastern District High School, Flora went to work in Manhattan as an executive secretary at a utility company. Flora married James Arthur and moved to Key West, Florida in 1943, where Jim was stationed with the U.S. Navy. While living there, Flora worked as a civilian for the Navy. After the birth of their children Flora became a full-time homemaker, caring for their four children, canning fruits and vegetables from the garden, and making all of her own and her daughter’s clothes. She was a talented seamstress, making beautiful clothing, slipcovers, curtains, bedspreads, and anything else that she wished to decorate their home with. In addition to her talents as a seamstress and wonderful mother, Flora is known for her delicious spaghetti and meatballs and eggplant parmesan. When Flora asked her grandchildren for their dinner request they all asked for spaghetti and meatballs. Flora loved to play scrabble and would consistently beat her opponents. She had a real gift of remembering new words and was an exacting speller. After raising their children in Scotia, NY and Burlington, VT, Flora and Jim moved to Boca Raton, FL where they lived for 27 years before returning to Vermont in 2001. Flora was predeceased by her husband, Jim in 2008, after 65 years of marriage. She is survived by her daughter, Flora Hurteau and husband, Timothy of Georgia, and grandsons, Matthew and wife, Sarah of Arizona; Timothy J. and wife, Lisa, and great-grandsons, Porter, Tobias and Samuel of Georgia: Flora’s son, Michael and wife, Madeleine of Essex Junction; grandson, Jeffrey and wife, Nancy, and great-granddaughter, Molly of Colorado; granddaughter, Kelly of Colorado; daughter, Maureen Miller and husband, Edwin of California; grandsons, Nathaniel, Zachary and Jacob, all of California: son James and wife, Echo of California; and granddaughter, Yuri of Washington, DC. A celebration of Flora’s life will take place at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So Main St., St. Albans on Monday, October 25, 2010, at 6:00 P.M. The Reverend Maurice J. Roy, Pastor of Holy Angels Parish will officiate. Flora’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be at the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph on Tuesday, at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to CarePartners Adult Day Center, 34 Franklin Park West, St. Albans, VT 05478. Messages of condolence are welcome at
