St. Albans: Eunice Melton Yonkers, 87, a resident of St. Albans since 1968, died Thursday morning, May 7, 2015, at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She was born on July 21, 1928, in Elmont, Virginia, daughter of Cora (Sharpe) and Robert Melton. She was a graduate of Madison College and Columbia University (School of Library Service), and later employed at libraries in New York, New Jersey and Franklin County, Vermont, including for many years at the City School in St. Albans. Eunice was once an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, and volunteer at the St. Albans Historical Society, Northwestern Medical Center and Robert Hull Fleming Museum. She was devoted to both the arts and the environment - a member of Vermont Public Radio, the Vermont Nature Conservancy, and the St. Albans Chapter of the Green Mountain Club for which she was Treasurer for many years. She was known for her gentle kindness, curiosity and wisdom, always open to new ideas and exploring alternate theories. She was continually self-educating by taking on new endeavors, a highlight of which was participating in the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange Project "Hallelujah", with which she performed at age 74. Survivors include son, Clement Yonkers and his partner, Polly Raine, grandson, Whitaker Raine of Lincoln, Vermont, granddaughter Ashley Russell and grandson-in-law Donnie Russell, with great-grandchildren Cecilia, Gabriel and Remmington, of Highgate, Vermont, in addition to family members in Virginia including sister Carolyn Yahia. Memorial contributions may be made to the Green Mountain Club, 4711 Waterbury-Stowe Road, Waterbury Center, VT 05677; Vermont Public Radio, 365 Troy Avenue, Colchester, VT 05446 or the Robert Hull Fleming Museum, 61 Colchester Avenue, Burlington, VT 05405. Visitation will be on Monday, May 18th from 5PM to 7PM in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Private messages of condolence may be sent through www.euniceyonkers.com.
