Obituary for Estelie Abell McWilliams

Swanton – Estelie Abell McWilliams, 90, a lifelong resident of this area passed away Tuesday September 13, 2011, at the Northwestern Medical Center with her family at her side. Born in St. Albans on February 9, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Melvin F. and Minnie J. (Dickinson) Abell. Estelie married Alexander McWilliams, on April 11, 1943, in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Mr. McWilliams preceded her in death on April 13, 1995. She attended elementary school in St. Albans and was a 1939 graduate of Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans. She attended Johnson Normal School from 1941 to 1942. Estelie was a nurse’s assistant at both units (Kerbs and St. Albans Hospitals) now the Northwestern Medical Center and also the Holiday House and Redstone Nursing Homes, retiring after 30 ½ years of nursing in all. She was a member of A.A.R.P. Chapter # 4758 of Franklin County. Estelie was a volunteer with over 300 hours for the Northwestern Medical Center and a volunteer for the Vermont Association for the Blind in Burlington. Survivors include her four sons and their wives, Alexander, Jr and Mary McWilliams; Gary Winston McWilliams; David Abell and Donna McWilliams and Kevin Fred and Joann McWilliams; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother; Melvin V. Abell of St. Albans. In addition to her parents and her husband of fifty-two years, Alexander, Estelie was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Jane McWilliams; step-grandsons, Shawn Helmes and Shawn Murphy; her brother, Elwyn Abell and her sister, Charlene Keseberg. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 12 Noon until 2:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday September 20th at 2:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Chapel. The Reverend Elizabeth Griffith will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Those wishing to honor Estelie’s memory are asked to contribute to the St. Albans Bay Methodist Church, c/o Donna McWilliams, P.O.
